On Sunday, the St. Louis Cardinals system went 1-3. The Cardinal Nation’s Player of the Day, Palm Beach right-hander Chen-Wei Lin, threw seven scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. Other standouts include Michael McGreevy, Matt Lloyd, Leonardo Bernal and Lizandro Espinoza.

The Memphis Redbirds (12-14) bullpen could not hold onto the lead against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (16-11, MIA), losing 5-3 at AutoZone Park on Sunday. In the process, the Redbirds dropped the series, four games to two.
Starter Michael McGreevy pitched five innings, allowing one run on seven hits while walking one and striking out four.
The Jumbo Shrimp struck first in the top of the fourth with a solo homer. The Redbirds responded in the bottom of the inning with two. Luken Baker led off the inning with a solo bomb to left field, with an impressive 109.4 mph exit velocity. With two out, Jared Young struck a solo longball to left center for the 2-1 lead, for his second home run in two games.

The Redbirds extended their lead to 3-1 in the seventh. Victor Scott II doubled and Jordan Walker’s two-out RBI single followed.

Victor Santos replaced McGreevy in the sixth and continued to pitch into the eighth, when Jacksonville took a 5-3 lead. After a leadoff single, he gave up an RBI double, an RBI triple, a sacrifice fly and a solo dinger to left.
Santos threw 2 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts. He took the loss, his fourth against one win as his ERA rose to 8.06. Chris Roycroft threw 1 1/3 innings, yielding no runs on no hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Redbirds pitching gave up five runs on 11 hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.
Walker went 1-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. Baker was 1-for-2 with a homer, an RBI, a walk, a HBP, and scored once. Young hit 1-for-4, also with a home run, an RBI, and scored once. Memphis totaled three runs on six hits with five walks and four strikeouts. The team stranded nine runners while going 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
Tuesday’s game: at Charlotte, TBD vs TBD 5:05 CT.
The Springfield Cardinals (14-7) failed to cash in on a seven-run comeback against the Arkansas Travelers (13-8, SEA) on Sunday at Hammons Field. The once-hot Double-A Cardinals have lost four in a row and dropped the home series, four games to two.
Starter Alex Cornwell threw three-plus innings, allowing eight runs on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
The Travelers opened the scoring in the top of the first. Four straight singles gave them an early 2-0 lead. The Cardinals cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first. Bryan Torres walked, and Nathan Church singled. R.J. Yeager’s RBI single drove in Torres.
In the third, Arkansas put up five. A walk, RBI double, RBI single and a three-run home run increased the lead to 7-1.
Arkansas added an insurance run in the top of the fourth. Cornwell loaded the bases with no outs and was pulled. A run came home on a groundout induced by reliever Leonardo Taveras.
The Cardinals came roaring back with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. Church plated a run on a ground out. Later, Matt Lloyd’s grand slam brought the lead to within two. Jacob Buchberger went back-to-back with a bomb of his own to bring the score to 8-7.

In the home eighth, Noah Mendlinger’s sacrifice fly brought home pinch-runner Mike Antico to erase the entire seven-run Travelers’ lead.
The Travelers put up seven in the ninth to put this game out of reach. Ian Bedell replaced Taveras in the fifth and was still pitching in the ninth. He allowed a double, an intentional walk, and a single to load the bases. A sacrifice fly gave Arkansas the lead. After another intentional walk, a double cleared the loaded bases. A single brought home another run, and a two-run longball extended the lead to 15-8.
Bedell threw five innings, allowing seven runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts to take his first loss this season. Taveras threw an inning, yielding no runs on no hits with no walks. The Cardinals gave up 15 runs on 13 hits with six walks and nine strikeouts.
Lloyd went 1-for-5, a grand slam for four RBI and a run scored. Yeager was 2-for-4 with one run driven in, a walk, and a run scored. Church hit 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Springfield totaled eight runs on 12 hits with five walks and seven strikeouts.
Tuesday’s game: at Tulsa, TBD vs. TBD 6:00 CT.
The Peoria Chiefs (7-14) fell to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (15-6, MIL) 14-6 at Dozer Park on Sunday. It was Peoria’s fifth consecutive loss as they won only the opener of the six-game set.
Starter Inohan Paniagua pitched four innings while allowing three runs on four hits while walking two and striking out four.
Paniagua’s struggles started in the first without a hit. Two hit batters, a walk and a wild pitch gave the Timber Rattlers a 1-0 lead.
The Chiefs took back the lead in the second. Leonardo Bernal’s lead-off moonshot tied the game at one. Anyelo Encarnacion’s sacrifice fly scored Osvaldo Tovalin to give Peoria the lead. Luis Rodriguez’s groundout plated Dakota Harris to extend the lead to 3-1.

The Timber Rattlers cut the lead to 3-2 on a triple and RBI single. In the bottom half of the inning, Bernal’s double allowed Won-Bin Cho to cross the plate to regain that two-run lead.

A solo home run from Wisconsin in the top of the fourth made it a one-run game again. In the bottom of the fourth, Darlin Moquete added an insurance run with a single to left to plate Rodriguez and extend the lead to 5-3.
Wilfredo Pereira replaced Paniagua in the top of the fifth and gave up two runs to tie the game on a sacrifice fly and an RBI double.
In the bottom of the fifth, Peoria regained the lead, 6-5 as Harris’ sacrifice bunt scored Bernal.
Nathanael Heredia relieved in the sixth and yielded two runs on forceouts to give the Timber Rattlers a 7-6 lead.
It fell apart against Tanner Jacobson in the eighth. Single runs scored on a sacrifice fly and a double before a three-run home run extended Wisconsin’s lead to 12-6.
Benito Garcia yielded the final runs in the ninth on a two-run double to give the visitors a 14-6 edge.
Chiefs pitching allowed 14 runs, 13 earned, on 14 hits while walking nine and striking out five.
Bernal went 2-for-3 with a homer, two RBI, and scored twice. Tovalin was 2-for-4 with a double and scored once. Harris hit 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Peoria totaled six runs on nine hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Tuesday’s game: at Cedar Rapids, LHP Brycen Mautz (0-2, 7.30) vs Andrew Morris RHP (1-1, 2.75) 6:35 CT.
The Palm Beach Cardinals (14-7) shut out the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels (8-13, MIN) 4-0 on Sunday at Lee Health Sports Complex. The Beach Birds took the set, four games to two.
Starter Chen-Wei Lin pitched seven innings, allowing no runs on three hits while walking none and striking out seven to earn his second win this season. In the process, the 22-year-old right-hander lowered his ERA to 1.64.
The Cardinals scored first in the fifth as Lizandro Espinoza singled to center to drive in Luis Piño.
Palm Beach added three insurance runs in the seventh on Piño’s solo homer and Espinoza’s two-run bomb.
Pino went 2-for-4 with a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored. Chase Adkison went 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk, and scored once. Espinoza hit 2-for-4, also with a homer, three RBI, and a run scored. The Cardinals totaled four runs on 10 hits while walking twice and striking out 10 times. They were just 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position, however.
Henry Gomez closed the game, pitching two innings, giving up no runs on two hits while walking one batter and striking out one. Palm Beach yielded no runs on five hits while walking one and striking out eight.
