In his season-ending press conference on Wednesday, St. Louis Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak made three announcements affecting in-uniform personnel.
The team will be hiring a total of four new coaches this offseason following the departures of hitting coach Jeff Albert, pitching coach Mike Maddux and bullpen coach Bryan Eversgerd. They join former bench coach Skip Schumaker, who left on Tuesday.
Maddux, 61, seeks a change in pace after serving as St. Louis’ pitching coach since 2018. The former MLB pitcher has been a big-league pitching coach with a total of four teams over the last 20 years, since 2003. Maddux could return in 2023 in an advisory role, per Mozeliak.
Albert, 41, was offered a new contract, but declined, with a factor being outside criticism directed at him over the team’s offensive performance. After six years in the Houston Astros organization, Albert rejoined the Cardinals as their hitting coach following the 2018 season.
Mozeliak noted the organization remains committed to the hitting philosophy charted by Albert from the majors to the minors. Minor league hitting coordinator Russ Steinhorn is an associate of Albert.
Eversgerd, 53, is being re-assigned in the organization as a special assistant after serving as bullpen coach for five seasons. The former pitcher first joined the Cardinals in 1989.
St. Louis’ other coaches, which include assistant hitting coach Turner Ward, pitching strategist Dusty Blake and run production coach Packy Elkins, are expected to return for 2023, though roles could change, per Mozeliak. External candidates for the openings will be considered as well.
On Tuesday, bench coach Skip Schumaker resigned to become the new manager of the Miami Marlins.
