In Monday’s Arizona Fall League opener, the Salt River Rafters were defeated by the Surprise Saguaros. Four Cardinals played. Jordan Walker walked and drove in a run for the Rafters.

The Salt River Rafters (0-1) fell to the Surprise Saguaros (1-0) at Salt River Fields on Monday afternoon. St. Louis Cardinals prospects Connor Thomas, Jordan Walker, Pedro Pages and Kyle Leahy all saw action.
Starter Thomas tossed 3 2/3 innings and gave up three runs, one earned, on four hits and two walks. The left-hander fanned two batters. Two errors on the second baseman in the second inning hurt Thomas, who was taken out in the fourth with 72 pitches thrown.
At the plate, Walker hit cleanup for the Rafters. The right fielder walked in the first and drove in a run via sacrifice fly in the third inning to tie the game 3-3. In the seventh, Walker was victimized by a great diving catch by the center fielder.
Pages started behind the dish, batting ninth,. He recorded a walk in the seventh inning but went 0-for-3. Pages also committed a throwing error.
Working out of the bullpen, Leahy had a rough debut, charged with four runs in two innings. The 25-year-old yielded a walk and four hits, including two home runs.
Arizona shortstop Jordan Lawlar had a big game for the Rafters with three runs and three RBI. The Saguaros took the lead in the fifth inning with four runs off Diamondbacks pitcher Jackson Goddard.
An interesting note is that Pedro Pages is the first AFL player to successfully appeal the automated ball-strike system .
