The Glendale Desert Dogs lost to the Salt River Rafters on Friday as four Cardinals saw action. Alex Cornwell threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Thomas Saggese, Leonardo Bernal and Matt Svanson also played.
Results from the Arizona Fall League game played Friday, October 25.
Glendale Desert Dogs 6, Salt River Rafters 7
At home, the Desert Dogs fell to the Rafters by a 7-6 score on Friday. Four Cardinals participated in the game. Second baseman Thomas Saggese and catcher Leonardo Bernal were in the starting lineup. Matt Svanson and Alex Cornwell pitched in relief.
Saggese hit third and went 0-for-3 with two walks and a run scored. in the first inning, Saggese drew a walk but was left stranded on third base.
In the third, Saggese struck out looking. In the fifth, he drew another walk and scored on a triple by Zyhir Hope of the Dodgers.
Saggese flied out to right field in the sixth. In his final at bat in the eighth, Saggese grounded into a force out to end the inning.
Catcher Bernal hit in the eighth spot. He was 1-for-4 with a run scored. In his first at bat in the second inning, Bernal grounded into a force out.
Bernal flied out to center field for the last out of the fourth inning. In the sixth, he hit an infield single to third and scored on a triple by Bryan Rincon of the Phillies.
In his final at bat in the eighth, Bernal struck out swinging.
The Rafters stole 10 bases with Bernal catching, including at least one with all six Desert Dogs pitchers on the mound.
Svanson pitched 1/3 of an inning, as he came into the game to get the final out of the third with two runners on base. He pitched to two batters, allowing one hit. The first hitter singled, scoring an inherited run and the second flied out to right field.
Cornwell threw 1 1/3 innings. The lefty pitched to two batters in the sixth, entering with the bases empty after Salt River had scored four to take a 6-3 lead. Cornwell yielded a single to the first batter and retired the second on a ground out to first base.
Cornwell returned for the seventh and faced four batters. After securing a fly out to right, he walked a batter, who stole second base on a strikeout. Cornwell threw a wild pitch to put the runner on third but buckled down and ended the inning on a ground out to first base.
No other Cardinals saw action.
Glendale is 9-6 in the AFL season.
