St. Louis Cardinals press release

The St. Louis Cardinals announced prior to tonight’s game (Thursday, June 20), that they have activated right-handed pitcher Adam Wainwright (left hamstring strain) from the 10-day Injured List and optioned right-handed pitcher Daniel Ponce de Leon to Memphis (AAA).  The team also announced that infielder Yairo Muñoz has been removed from the Paternity List and placed on the Restricted List due to travel delays in his return to St. Louis.

Wainwright, 5-6 with a 4.46 ERA, draws the start in tonight’s series finale against Miami.  He exited his last outing on June 9 at Chicago in the 5th inning after suffering a hamstring strain during his at-bat the previous inning.

Ponce de Leon authored six scoreless innings in his start last night against the Marlins in the Cardinals 2-1 win while making his third start of the season for St. Louis.

The identity of the Cardinals’ fifth starter remains Michael Wacha, despite Ponce de Leon’s better numbers in limited duty with St. Louis.

However, it puzzles me that Ponce de Leon has been more effective with St. Louis than with Memphis. In fact, the last time the 27-year old went at least six scoreless innings for the Redbirds was last July 15, 13 Triple-A starts ago.

In related news, it appears that Memphis will be pairing up starters Mike Hauschild and Evan Kruczynski in a tandem arrangement. That would open a spot for Ponce de Leon to rejoin the Memphis rotation.

The Munoz move was required since Paternity List stays are mandated to be no more than three days.

Memphis had an open roster spot so there will be no chain reaction transactions.
