I was contacted by one of the regulars on our board, who asked for fewer game threads this season so there is more room for topics. Based on that thought, here is my proposal. I am opening this for discussion as the board is yours. I just make the first posts to get the game threads going. I still plan to post starting pitchers as always.
Spring training – one thread for all spring games
Regular season (StL) – one game thread per series
Regular season (minors) – one game thread per month
I much prefer individual game threads. Sometimes, when I can’t watch the game I like to just read the game thread from the night before to catch up on what happened before I check the highlights. If that starts on page 15 of the weekend series thread, that’s a lot more difficult to navigate.
I prefer individual threads too but one change I would request is to not open the thread until a day or two before the game. Last year some of the game threads were opened 7-10 days in advance so the thread had migrated to page 2 of the board by the time the game actually took place.
Here is my challenge. It takes me time to look up the starters, game times and television plans for each St. Louis game. I prefer to prepare them a series at a time in advance because I am also busy running this site. Sometimes, people like to know ahead of time who is pitching. Sometimes they comment several days ahead. Sometimes they don’t, so threads get out of sequence.
If one or more of the community members want to take over starting the St. Louis threads, then I am fine with that. But it also comes with responsibility for being consistent and accurate in how you deliver the info for six (or hopefully seven) months straight.
The hope is that we have an approach that most people can deal with. Keep your comments coming.
Considering every topic that has ever been started on this board is still present, I don’t see where the room is an issue. If the game threads were only 5 or 6 comments for every game, I could understand having 1 thread for every series. Since some of the threads become 6 pages for a single game, I think it is best to have a different thread for every game. For the minor leagues, I think a month of minor league games in 1 thread would be too much. Maybe 1 for every week. 1 thread for the preseason would be OK. That would actually allow us to see how combining many games into 1 thread would work out.
Individual game threads for me. I’ve visited several other fan sites and community boards and everyone does a single game thread per game. It flows much better and just looks better.
Brian, is there a way to create another forum with just the game threads? I’ve seen some other fan sites that have a dedicated forum page with just the game threads.
One way to avoid the sequencing problem would be to pin the game or series threads until they are completed. That works well for some football sites, but they play once per week. Not sure how well that might work for baseball, but might be worth considering especially if you end up doing series threads. To save manual clicks, can you pin a thread and set a date or clock timer so it auto unpins and falls down the ladder when completed? Of course, you might not want to add threads to the pinned region.
Having said that, I do prefer individual game threads.
On some other sites when you click on a thread you’ve already been in, it takes you to the first reply you haven’t read.
I haven’t been able to do that here, and it would be very convenient in a series thread of 3 or 4 games.
I would like to see daily minor league threads. Even if there is no starting pitching listed or even individual games listed.
I think you should do whatever fits for you to do. its a lot of work im sure. I would prefer individual games but I do see how having individual series threads would be easier for you. as long as it doesn’t get posted too soo, Im fine with it. theres no reason to start talking about a series down the road instead of whats currently going on but people will do it and you will just have too many threads to go through. that’s my take for what it is. as this has become my outlet for talking cardinals baseball, I thank you for what you have done as well as for what is to come.
1982 willie, I did not mean to complain. My concern was about waiting and starting every St. Louis thread a day or two before that particular game starts. That is the part that is too much work for my liking.
It is roughly the same amount of work for me to start one thread for a series vs. three individual threads at the same time. So that is the question I’d rather everyone focus on.
A thread per game. ABSOLUTELY!
I wouldn’t want to wade through 3-4-5-6-7 pages to try and find where the last game of the series starts in a series thread.
Lets not complicate this. A thread per game.
cc, I am not complaining about posting minor league games and starters each morning. I have always done that as a reminder than the notebook from the prior night’s games is posted on the home page.
I can post them on a new thread each morning or on the existing minor league thread for that week or month.
Again, the question I’d appreciate focus on is the latter one. How often should there be a new minor league thread? So far, we have votes for each day, each week and each month.
Unless there is a clear majority in favor of change, my inclination will be to leave things as they have been. However, we don’t need to rush to a decision, either. Still more than a month to go before the season and a lot of regulars should be returning to the forum in the upcoming days.
As Rats notes, one of the major limitations of having more than one day’s worth of games on the same thread is that there is no way to easily mark day 1 from day 2 from day 3.
jj, I went back and checked the available settings again and there is no way for users to be taken to the most recent post they have not read on a thread. I agree it would be a nice enhancement, though.
Euro, the pinning idea is good, but unfortunately, it is a manual process. Pinning/unpinning threads every day would be a pain. Like you said, maybe for a series, but then, the fewer number of threads would probably not fall off the front page, anyway.
BHC, I could probably create a special game thread forum. We tried that about 10 years ago on Scout and folks did not like having to go to a separate board from the main discussion conversations. If I recall correctly, we even tried a St. Louis board and a separate minor league one for game threads. But ultimately, we got back to one main board. However, you all should keep discussing what you like in 2019.
I honestly like the idea of having seperated MLB and milb forums. It would help to reduce the clutter of the main forum.
Well, let’s see what others think, but my observation is that there are a lot of ideas being thrown out that go beyond the question I asked, which is how to best organize game threads for St. Louis and minors.
I guess I didn’t really make my preference known. I would rather each ML game have its own thread. I would also rather have a new thread for each day of the minor league season.
I like BlackHills’ idea of a separate forum for just the game threads (MLB and the minors). My concern was that too many topics were disappearing off of page one of the “topics” and that lead to conversation becoming everything but that topic. I’ve seen a few times that a participant will suggest taking an off the course conversation to a more appropriate “topic”.
If we could get separate forums that would be tremendously helpful.
Another potential approach is for me to increase the number of topics on the each page of the board. Here during the off-season, an entire week of discussion is on page 1, but its gets shorter in time during the season. (See there. I just did what I asked you not to do…)
I am REALLY opposed to the minors being shunted off onto a separate forum. This place’s foundation dating back to the Fanhome days has been it’s substantive MiLB discussion.
Sites evolve so maybe that subject is not as wanted as it was. I’ll stop here before I post something I truly would regret.
