1:15 p.m. RHP Luke Weaver (6-10, 4.66) vs. RHP Jakob Junis (6-11, 4.98) FOX Sports Midwest/KMOX

ParticipantDo we get the brooms out today? Probably depends on which incarnation of Weaver shows up to pitch.
August 12, 2018 at 9:16 am #6506314NyquisT
ParticipantIf Weaver wants to keep his name on the depth chart conversation for ’19 he’s going to have to start pitching more efficiently. With CMartinez, Wacha, Reyes coming back by then and the steady pitching of Mikolas and Flaherty, plus the emergence of Hudson, Gomber, Poncedeleon and Gant… rotation spots will be at a premium.
This was Weaver’s season to break out and ’18 has been mostly disappointing. He’ll need to step it up from now through ’19 spring training.
August 12, 2018 at 9:19 am #65065The red brooms are indeed waving, Wagee! The offensive onslaught resumes today at 1:15p (cst)…2:15p (est)….8:15p (cat) for those of you presently vacationing in Zimbabwe. I’m inching closer and closer to our double-digit run output in this series. Today I think we accomplish the feat. I’m calling this one 11-6 Birds with Patrick Ian Wisdom issuing a game ball souvenir to some lucky Royals fan nestled about 8 rows up in the left field bleachers.

jj-cf-stlParticipantT,
When we evaluate Weavers 2018, and his role going forward, I like to start with games started.By this evening Luke will lead the Cardinals in GS this season. We’re asking a lot of this young man.
Many of the others mentioned above have been unavaible for multiple starts, and for extended periods.
For me, I need to remember that the comparisons of the possible rotation going forward, starts with how others would have produced under Lukes workload.

ParticipantGood point. I like Weaver. I like his dedication and durability. I hope that can stack up against all the lively arms that he’ll be competing against.
August 12, 2018 at 10:12 am #65078
jj-cf-stlParticipantBR shows Luke throwing 138 IP last season, across all levels.
He’s at ~126 IP going into todays start. I’m watching how stl handles his IP and how effective he can be if they let him throw 160 to 170 IP.
August 12, 2018 at 10:13 am #65079I think this is an important game to win. We have Washington for four and it appears they are starting to get on a roll. Then Milwaukee, at Los Angeles, and at Colorado. A tough schedule the next two weeks. By the end of that Colorado series we will probably know if we have a legit shot at a wildcard.

August 12, 2018 at 10:22 am #65081Weaver is going to be fine. Competition is a great thing to drive these guys forward. Folks forget he’s still a rookie and learning to pitch at the highest level. He’s taking his lumps right now. He’ll figure it out soon enough. The additional depth also protects against injuries hurting too much down the road and opens up trade possibilities to upgrade another position of need.
August 12, 2018 at 10:45 am #65083
jj-cf-stlParticipantHow effectively Luke pitches going forward probably determines how many starts and IP they allow him this season.
As Ny said, there are other SP’s that will be coming off the DL and in the pen.
Here’s an opportunity against a lower level lineup for Luke to show he deserves his rotation spot.

stlcard25ParticipantWisdom making his debut.
Today's #STLCards lineup (8/12):
Carpenter DH
Molina C
J. Martínez RF
Ozuna LF
DeJong SS
Gyorko 3B
Garcia 2B
Bader CF
Wisdom 1B

August 12, 2018 at 11:12 am #65085I guess F. Pena can plan on taking the rest of the year off.
August 12, 2018 at 12:00 pm #65094Weaver scratched, Ross getting the start.
August 12, 2018 at 12:14 pm #65097I agree, Molina needs a day off. We want him in the lineup everyday for the next couple of weeks. Today would be the perfect rest day for him.
August 12, 2018 at 12:17 pm #65098
stlcard25ParticipantWeaver getting hurt takes this from a likely win to a likely loss, IMO. Hopefully Ross can eat innings and not crush the bullpen with no off days for a while
August 12, 2018 at 12:34 pm #65102Interesting stat, but not too meaningful without mentioning how many series in between. In the last two years at least, the series were two games instead of three. And there is always only one series per year between the two at KC.
A win today would give the #STLCards their first three-game series sweep of Kansas City at Kauffman Stadium since June 22-24, 2012.

jj-cf-stlParticipantMayers has had 3 days rest.
Norris 4 days and webb 5 days.August 12, 2018 at 1:19 pm #65109
jj-cf-stlParticipantI like what Scildt did with RF, DH and 1B/3B.
Bozo stays in the OF, Carps bat still in the lineup and Jedd doesn’t sit to let Wisdom start.August 12, 2018 at 1:32 pm #65110Ross at 21 pitches and has only recorded one out. Bases loaded.
August 12, 2018 at 1:35 pm #65112Wisdom not off to a good start – gives up a run scoring error at 1B
August 12, 2018 at 1:37 pm #65113Cardinals finally escape the inning thanks to a pitcher’s best friend. Royals lead 1-0.
Where is Pugs and his colorful commentary?
August 12, 2018 at 1:44 pm #65114As I was starting to admire the KC pitcher’s strike %, he hits DeJong
August 12, 2018 at 1:56 pm #65115Ross with a much better second inning, but barely 50% strikes through 2
August 12, 2018 at 1:59 pm #65116Wisdom gets his first hit on his first plate appearance!
Not exactly hard contact, but hey, he’s on base!
August 12, 2018 at 2:06 pm #65117A guy that’s throwing 67% strikes has already hit two batters, and it costs him. Yadi got HBP’d, moving Wisdom to 2nd. JMart drives Wisdom in and Yadi “scampers” to 3rd.
