Is this dud of a cleanup hitter that we have, the one that we traded some good young talent for, ever going to do anything for us other than groundout or hit little pop flies?
I thought he was a tough out when he was in Miami but he looks about worthless to me now.

Front office didn’t do their homework and keyed on his 2017 performance which was his peak year, and an anomaly in his career stats. He’s actually performing this year very closely to his performance in 2015 when he was making $545K. Where’s O’Neill!!?
I don’t know that the Marlins got all that much over-whelming talent for Ozuna. Maybe we could have gotten someone else instead though with that package. The traded players wouldn’t have helped in 2018 though.

First, he’s young so I wouldn’t put much weight into stats of young players as they get better as they hit their prime. Second, he was brought up to the ML level straight from A+ ball and needed some time to adjust (obviously). Then he was crushing it in 2016 before breaking his hand and coming back too early. 2017 doesn’t look like an anomaly given that context.
Due diligence could’ve been spent making sure his shoulder was okay if that’s the reason for the fall-off. Also, the trainers should’ve taken into account that he has been shown to play through injuries (2016) and been more proactive this spring with DL’ing him. I don’t know what the issue is with him if he’s not injured. He’s been unlucky, but not enough to crater this poorly, as Carpenter was earlier this year.
Weaver needs to step up so that he doesn’t end up in the bullpen as well. Gant, Gomber, and Poncedeleon have made strides this year and we have Wacha, Martinez, and Reyes coming back in 2019 too

I don’t know what to make of Ozuna. He hasn’t been this bad since his first season. He is young but he will be 28 for next season is not like he is that far away from being in his prime years. I have to believe that the FO knows a lot more than we do but my fear is that after the season they will say he played through the year hurt and he may not be ready for spring training due to whatever is needed to get him healthy.

the Cubs pressed all the right buttons in how they put their pen together, i give them props for that
going into the season i thought it was their potential biggest issue and it has turned out to be their biggest strength…kudos to them
for us, we pressed all the wrong buttons (lucked out on Norris)
as poor as we are (which isnt really all that bad) we havent been destroyed, just lost a lot of key games because of the pen IMO…
as anecdotal as it may be i can think on in my head specifically of at least 8 games we have lost because the pen imploded and coudlnt do their job….now…that happens to every team so giving us an extra 8 games (which is just an anecdotal amount not a real total number)…and 8 games over isnt exactly lighting the world on fire, but with the pen being ravaged by injuries AND poor performances…AND the offense being dumb…it makes me think this team really is overachieving to be where it is
everyone is complaining about us potentially maybe only trading for some bullpen pieces…but really, that is all this team may need to right it’s ship
i want a better hitter or two..i want to cut bait on some players… but if we coudl fix the pen, we will win more games even with running Fowler out there, and OZuna hitting cleanup
it may not be enough at this point, but snagging some quality bullpen pieces at the deadline woudlnt be wasted or dumpster diving moves…they would help

I can’t speak for slumps (although I bet we’ve got most beaten there too) but the Cubs are 28th out of 30 teams (which is 3rd best, for context) in roster effect of DL moves this year. The Cards are 5th, FWIW. The Cubs were also 28th last year, with the Cards at 24th.
I was specifically thinking of Bryant and Darvish being on the DL quite a bit. Morrow is on there now also. Baez has been banged up.
Rizzo hasn’t had a very good year although he has been better since hitting leadoff which is weird. Must be the Carp syndrome.
Jager is correct. While we have been shuttling relievers around like crazy to no avail, their pen has been relatively stable.
I am watching the Cubs play Arizona. They are struggling offensively in the series so far and today is no exception. 2-1 Arizona after 4.
Their offense is feast or famine. They may go five games in a row scoring 3 or less then go five games in a row scoring 10 or more.
Overall I think the Cubs have had almost no significant injuries for several years in a row now. Especially considering the age of their rotation, that’s pretty lucky. Imagine if Waino had been healthy as Jon Lester has been in his career?

6-1 Arizona. The D-Backs just hit their first grand slam (Ahmed) of 2018 against Duensing. Chatwood 6 walks in 4.2 innings.

Significant meaning season altering, I suppose. I’d probably give Darvish that designation this year but not Bryant.
By the way jager, I agree that if we just shore up the bullpen right now we could be competitive the rest of the year. Would it be enough to be a playoff contender? I don’t know but we would probably win enough to sell some tickets which may be what ownership is thinking.
Whether it is now or in the offseason we are going to have to re-toll this thing though. It is inevitable.

He’s out til at least August, but there hasn’t seemed to be anything concrete about his return in a while.
Otherwise, he’s the one responsible for Marp’s garden that produced the secret salsa.
Big series against the Cubs this weekend. A sweep still gives us hope for a division title although slim. But with the wild card still within reach… A series win would help too as 28 of our remaining games are against teams ahead of us in the wildcard race as of today.
