6:10 p.m. TBA vs. RHP Homer Bailey (1-7, 6.68) FOX Sports Midwest/KMOX
Update: Austin Gomber (0-0, 3.77 in 15 relief appearances) will make his first MLB start.
Homer Bailey is one of the worst pitchers in the game. Gomber is…better than that. This game needs to be one where they put their foot on Homer’s throat and don’t let up.
I’ll say 8-3 Cards with Marp taking Homer deep and Pham 3-5 with two doubles.

I’d hope they bring in a few new players by the desdline. ⚾️Some of our players have been playing the game casually. The OF should be trashed and re-built, we could use a little hustle out there. BTW…. how’s the Fowler getting a chance to come out of his 1 1/2 slump coming along?
Gyorko, DeJong will never win gold gloves and JoMartinez is well, JM. SDI says Wong is the best defensive player in MLB and we are still last in defense.
It is beginning to amaze me that some of the Cardinals faithful are still drinking the Kool-aid that the FO is serving up. Its not even loyalty anymore, its more like sticking your head in the ground.
At the start of the season, I thought the offense would be at least as good as last year, and probably better. But I was wary of the pitching, both starters and especially the bullpen.
The ‘pen’s troubles does not surprise me. It is a hodge-podge of guys who really had no roles, and were utilized as if they had roles. In other words, even if a guy came in and pitched an stress-free inning, he would be yanked after that one inning and another guy would come on.
The starters have been better than my forecast, and the offense worse. The defense is the real killer though. Even with our offense and lousy bullpen, if we kept innings to three outs, rather than having to get four and five so often, the club would be better.
Bottom line, the 2018 Cardinals are a textbook case example of a .500 ball club.
I wish I could attribute the bullpen’s problems to them having unclear roles or their usage patterns, but I believe the problems are much deeper than that.
I wonder what Maddux would have to say about this and why he isn’t under any scrutiny? I guess he is still on his honeymoon? Mabry sure took a lot of heat for the offense.
I want to apologize for some of my comments in last nights Game #100 thread. I could have been a little more mature in explaining why I disagreed with Schildt’s decision to pull Poncedeleon. I understand that’s the way of the game today,but I’m just old school and believe a pitcher should at least have a chance to be able to finish what he started esp if he has a chance at history. Nolan Ryan at age 42 pitched in a game where he had 164 pc, and the next game 152… John Tudor was matched up with Gooden in 85 in an epic pither’s duel that went 10inn with Tudor getting a complete game shutout. Tudor had a pitch count of over 140. He still pitched great the rest of the season and into the playoffs. Even if we would have won last night, I still would have disagrred with the decision but the frustration of this year with our offense and pen just reached a boiling point last night. I should have been more upset at the pen for ruining a masterful job from Poncedeleon. It wasn’t fair to lay all blame on Schildt… he was just doing what he felt was the right decision at the time not only for the team but Poncedeleon.
No problem.We all get a little fired up after a game like last night.We all have some strong opinions and sometimes get a little testy.It happens.
Even with an inconsistent offense and unreliable bullpen, I still remain hopeful for this season. Primarily because we’ve done it before. Back in 2011 we were 8.5 GB in the WC Starting Set 1st and something lit a fire under our ass, went. 20-8 to close out the season and eventually won the title. I realize the players are different and TLR isn’t managing but I still remain optimistic that we’re going to find that fire and turn our season around. If we gain a game a week in the division and .5 in the wild card, we’ll be in good shape going into the final week. We can do this. We will do this.
Let’s. Go Cardinals.2011 – I’m with you 100%. I haven’t given up on the season either. A full two months plus still to go.
The season definitely isn’t over, but the struggle to consistently win games and series has worn on us all, I think. Look at the Pirates. They were basically expected to do nothing this year, got off to a good start and then faded. Now they’ve won ten in a row and the fans (I’m friends with plenty here in Western PA) are excited.
I’d just like to see the Cards do something similar. It doesn’t have to be 10 in a row but something like 6 in a row, 10 of 12, 12 of 15… anything to make you feel like they could really be on the verge again.
Between the injuries, bullpen losses, bad defense or base running, cold offense… it’s always been something for this team, especially on the downhill slide since they had a solid start.
Don’t worry 25. I am sure they will do just enough to tease us and give us false hope for next year!
25-we all would love to see a 5 or 6 game winning streak.But I don`t think this team has the tools to make that happen right now.Rarely are all parts (offense,defense,pitching) all working together in the same game.Too much inconsistent play in all areas of the game for a long win streak to happen IMO.
I remember 2011 but after 100 games they were 53-47. A little better than 50-50. I don’t think they will get much better and will finish a couple of games over .500 but would love to be proven wrong and eat nice side of crow.
True NJ… That team was 53-47 after 100 games but I look at it from this angle. That team was also 55-50 after 105 games and if we can do that, it will put us within 5 games of the lead of either the div or WC depending what the brewers do. That would be big going into the trading deadline. That more than likely would force the FO. to make a deal and get a couple pieces were missing… Preferably the bullpen. Not a big name player where we give up a lot but just an impact player that makes a difference going into the final 2 months of the season. It may be just the die hard, always believe, never give up hope Cardinal fan in me saying this but I have to look at the glass half full.
Need a win. Let's get a win!

At the deadline in 2011 Mo acquired Dotel, Jackson, Furcal, and Scrabble. While not huge names those guys collectively spurred us on to that big run. I just don’t see us adding that much this time if we even add at all.
Not a great start. Carp and Yadi strike out, and Yadi lines a drive into the stands that appears to have struck a young fan.
