Dejong should be back in this series.
Paul DeJong will join #stlcards in San Francisco on Thursday. He will not be activated before the game, says Matheny. Earliest would be Friday then. #cardinals

Don’t know, but a roster jam is just ahead. Without further changes, Memphis has room for none of the three to be sent down when DeJong, Bowman and Gregerson are activated.
(To clarify, Memphis’ last open spot will be used today when someone is sent down for Fowler.)
Shortstop Paul DeJong, who homered and doubled in his final rehab game Tuesday with Class AAA Memphis, will join the Cards on Thursday in San Francisco, but won’t be activated.
Matheny said the major-league training staff will run the shortstop through another battery of tests and the earliest DeJong could be in the lineup Friday. He suffered a broken hand on May 18 and had surgery to aid its healing. He has been able to rebuild his grip strength in recent weeks, and in four games with the Triple-A Redbirds DeJong went four for 13 (.308) with three extra-base hits and four strikeouts.
Dexter Fowler, who spent the Arizona series on the paternity list, will, by rule, return to the team and the active roster before Thursday’s game, Matheny confirmed.
All of the other full-season rosters are full, too. They may be dragging their feet a bit, waiting for other injuries.
They release a guy today and tomorrow, someone is hurt and they have a need. During the first two months, they essentially run a taxi squad of experienced players in extended spring training, but that safety net is gone now that short-season play is underway.
Another note on Dejong…in his year of PT post callup, he’s hitting .279/.332/.517 for a 123 wRC+ over 614 PA. He’s hit 33 homers and driven in 84 with an ever-improving batting eye and defense that has been solid at short. That adds up to 4.7 fWAR. He’s a bright guy too, which gives hope that he will keep this up. He’s a big piece to get back in the lineup.
Great win last night with some consistent offense. Getting DeJong back should help the offense as well, although perhaps not right away. He made need some adjustment time. When you have been out awhile, those pitches are on you pretty quick until you get your timing back.
Will be interesting to see what the club does in juggling rosters across the top three levels.
Cueto was not that successful against the Cards when he was in Cinci as I recall. Would like to see him knocked out early tonight. Cards are .247 BA, and .692 ops against him lifetime. Combine that with a 45-43 team this year and it could be a good game to watch.

Could really use a quality start from Weaver tonight. For whatever reason he seems to have regressed from the end of last season. Not sure if it was a change in philosophy or what but he’s got the talent to pitch well enough to give this team breathing room.

Indeed, stlcard25. I thought he looked pretty solid the first month of the season, but it seems like it’s been a slow but sure decline since then. I wonder if Weaver isn’t better suited for the pen at this level?
Good start to the game for the Cards. 4 runs off Cueto, including a Gyorko homer. Johnny doesn’t have a lot of velocity so far tonight, sitting 88-89 and maybe touching 90.
I think Samardzidja is suppose to be off the DL this weekend.
I think that’s 2 auto wins. Don’t like pitchers who come off the DL. Usually a little rusty.
Weaver has thrown five really good shutout innings so far. Just maybe he is not relief material quite yet.
Bowman down to Memphis is a smart move. Finally, we make a move I agree with. You can’t keep guys around because they had a good rookie year.

My (BW) opinion is that Weaver is not even in the top 10 of most pressing problems with the 2018 Cardinals.
C27, Bowman’s first season was best, but his 2017 was good enough to stick around, too. This season has been a different story.

Wouldn’t be hard to go out on a limb with that prediction Brian. Weaver had a 5.16 ERA and a whip of 1.449. This outing will pad his stats a bit.
Who in the heck are they sending down? I think it might be a bullpen arm or a DL stint for someone. Whi hasn’t pitched very much in the pen recently?
Well, if you agree that Weaver is going to improve, why are you riding him? Most teams would be delighted to have Weaver in their rotation. Like I said, the Cards have many, many bigger problems.
Wacha struggled and some posters right here wanted him traded. Before he was hurt, along with Mikolas, he was one of the team’s most dependable starters this year. Sometimes good players go through bad stretches.
Among relievers, demotion candidates would seem to be Brebbia, Mayers and Gomber. My guess is Munoz.
