June 12, 2018 at 6:22 pm #56255For a split second, I saw 3B beside Martinez’ name instead of 38 and thought they have gone completely nuts. Bader and Gyorko need to be more consistent in capitalizing on these opportunities against lefties.
June 12, 2018 at 7:24 pm #56256Nice start by Mikolas. If Fowler is in RF he takes about a half dozen steps and gives up on it on that loop single by Pirela.
June 12, 2018 at 7:27 pm #56257Pham needed to take his bat off his shoulders more that AB.
June 12, 2018 at 8:26 pm #56259
stlcard25ParticipantNo hits, no walks for the Cards so far tonight. Not pretty and Mikolas blinked first.
June 12, 2018 at 8:46 pm #56261We got a hit finally and most importantly a leadoff hit.
Then Munoz grounds into a DP
June 12, 2018 at 8:47 pm #56262
stlcard25ParticipantFinally a hit, only to be erased by a double play. Is the Padres bullpen really good or the offense just slept through their alarm?
June 12, 2018 at 9:03 pm #56263Pham with one of his patented singles. 7 game hitting streak.
Pham has not had an XBH since May 26th
June 12, 2018 at 9:17 pm #56264We got 4-2 on a single by Ozuna and rbi ground out by Molina.
Jedd looked like crap that ab.
Hicks in and had K’d the side with 12 pitches. I do believe the last pitch was an 86 mph change up.
June 12, 2018 at 9:48 pm #56266So the Cardinals have played 65 games and 21 year old Jordan Hicks has pitched in 31 of them already. He has now pitched four of the past five days and went two innings tonight. That is just freaking inexcusable. I understand he is the best arm they have in the bullpen but this poor kid is being ruined before our eyes. How many pitchers does this damn clown manager have to tear up before something is done? It just pisses me off watching this nonsense.
June 12, 2018 at 9:49 pm #56267Disappointing 9 game stretch (even if we get a win tomorrow) with a really good opportunity to pick up a game or two on the brewers and cubs. Guess we’ll need to beat them head to head
June 12, 2018 at 10:04 pm #56269Sorry Hicks 4 times in 6 days but the point still stands. 31 out of 65. Goodness…
June 12, 2018 at 10:34 pm #56270Yet another bad loss. They started a bullpen pitcher, a bullpen pitcher.
June 12, 2018 at 10:34 pm #56271Talking about Hicks being over used, how many games is Mayers up to?
June 12, 2018 at 10:51 pm #56274Looked like our team was just going through the motions tonight. 4-2 loss against one of the worst teams in baseball using a bullpen start. 5-for-31 (.161) with 7 LOB is down right embarrassing against a cadre of relievers. Unfortunately no one in the FO or on-field management is capable of reading these players the riot act after a dismal performance. Not sure who the real leaders among the players are any more either. It’s not evident to me right now.

stlcard25ParticipantAt this point, I think that it is mental. Granted, a lot of baseball is mental, but this team can play well against good teams and then lay down a bunch of clunkers like tonight. To go 5-4 or 4-5 against three subpar teams really does not help. I suspect they will still be in the race until the end, but they need to get their heads in the game… all of them.

ParticipantI don’t get the tirades about a manager overusing relief pitchers. Relievers are still human beings with different bodies… arms, muscles and blood and there is no expiration date stamped on them. Hicks is still very young with more endurance than say a guy like 33 y.o. Norris.
Hicks is our most reliable guy out there. Mikolas needed some innings behind him and we’re still in the game. If another pitcher is brought in and the Pads slam him, thus adding to the SD lead, you’d hear “why wasn’t Hicks brought in”. Matheny, the coaches and the trainer determine who is able to pitch and when. If there is a chance that an arm is being abused the player’s union would have something to say. I don’t hear Hicks claiming that he is being overused. The MLBPA is all for protecting its players and so are the Cards, and that includes Matheny. File this under: you’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t.
June 13, 2018 at 8:39 am #5629814 I posted on here about Rosenthal’s over use and look where he is. Even Boras raised the red flag. Bottomline is you don’t use a 21 year old like this. Not one that is promising as Hicks. Heck with development he could be in the rotation. Hell people bitch any time a starter gets near or over 100 pitches. Now imagine all the warm up in the bullpen and the pitches thrown on the mound and multiply that by 4. That’s how many pitches the kid has thrown in a 6 day period and tell me if that makes any sense. Its ridiculous to use him this much, period.
June 13, 2018 at 8:47 am #56300I believe Hicks is a rare asset that doesn’t need to be pitching when we are losing. If we aren’t tied, or ahead, I would NEVER use him. Now his availability for today is in question. This would have been a perfect time to bring Poncedeleon in. Or use Gomber, he had thrown 16 pitches since Saturday.Even Cecil would have been a better choice. What are we paying him 7 mill for? Use him for mop up duty, as he can’t be trusted most any other time.

ParticipantYou probably know more the use of relief pitchers than me. I’m saying there are all different varieties. True, “people” bitch about the 100 pitch count like arms will automatically fall off. I don’t get that either. Some players have different tolerance. I’m a little old-school so I’m in Gibson’s corner on this.

ParticipantBingo… this just popped up on the P-D site.
June 13, 2018 at 9:01 am #5630314NyquisT
ParticipantC-27… same thing. Bring a less reliable pitcher in who gets banged around and the game gets away, and you’ll hear about Hicks NOT being brought in.
June 13, 2018 at 9:13 am #56307Hicks is still very young with more endurance than say a guy like 33 y.o. Norris.
Endurance has nothing to do with it. A pitching motion is an unnatural motion, which is part of the reason why as velocities go higher, there are more Tommy John surgeries.
Matheny, the coaches and the trainer determine who is able to pitch and when.
And Matheny has proven to be terrible at it, and we have seen no evidence the coaches or training staff can override his decisions….
If there is a chance that an arm is being abused the player’s union would have something to say.
I can’t think of an example of the Player’s Union doing this. Is there an overusage clause in the CBA? If not, it won’t happen.
I don’t hear Hicks claiming that he is being overused.
He’s a rookie. Rookies do what they are told, when they are told. If you don’t recognize that, you’ve never played sports (think of a freshman on a varsity team). He hasn’t had this kind of workload before, he is not used to the toll it will take over a full season. What the Cardinals are risking is him breaking down in August and September, right as we near the playoffs…
But let’s have Matheny keep trotting him out there every day, and maybe when Hicks has Tommy John the Cardinals will finally say enough.

ParticipantHow did baseball work back in the days before: ~100 pitches = end of your day ?
