I mentioned maybe a week or so ago Ryan Mitchell had been playing better and his OBP was great. I was digging into his statcast data and it is concerning just how passive Mitchell is. For the month of May, Mitchell has done a fantastic job of only swinging at 11.6% of pitches out of the zone. But in zone he is only swinging 49.7% of the time which gives him a overall swing rate of 30.7%. That just screams he is passive and watching pitches instead of looking for one to hit. It may work against A ball pitchers who can’t throw strikes, but it won’t work against higher level pitchers although he is still young and can adjust. I just don’t want to see him go the Chase Davis route of being too passive.
Leonardo Bernal stands out as having been more impressive this year than most would think. If you just look at May, he is hitting .258/.368/.484 which gives him a wRC+ of 116 on the month. He has been making good swing decisions as he has a May O-Zone Swing % of 25.8% (55 grade) and he actually swings at strikes (68.7%). He is hitting the ball hard with good average EV of 91.3 and an EV90 of 106.6 which both are tracking like 55 grades as well.
It will be interesting to see how Bernal keeps developing this year. He needs to keep improving overall, but given how young he is the fact he is competing as well as he has been is a good sign he can provide at last some value at the MLB level in the future. He needs more time though and I wouldn’t expect him to debut this year as he can use the whole season to round out at Memphis.

Will Baez get the solo POTD this morning? Two more homers last night. I’m not sure if he’ll ever get to the average, but I still see a player like Tommy Pham in Baez.

Thursday’s game (5/28) between the Springfield Cardinals and Wichita Wind Surge has been rained out. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 4:05 PM.
Franklin with a bit of a rough outing tonight. He didn’t make it out of the 2nd. 2 runs in and on the hook for another one and he was very inefficient doing it, over 60 pitches. Still, he’s looked ok overall in his first couple of months at Peoria.

Quinn is frustrating to me as a fan. He has so much talent but just cannot find the strike zone anymore. He isn’t throwing first pitch strikes and just can’t throw strikes overall. I hate to say it but he may be looking at a future as a RP with such a low strike %.

Baez is on fire. It’s good to see him progress. He will eventually make our outfield a plus. Which I thought at the the beginning of this year to be a black hole.

How long is it before Cho becomes a serious prospect again? He has been on a tear. He has 35 rbis in 41 games. I’ve always liked his obp skills, but little else. He seems to be putting together a great season.
I was the high voter on Cho this winter by a long shot, so I feel a little vindicated. He had a solid last half of the year at Peoria last year and has a good solid start this year as well. Not huge power, but I think he’s already made himself a serious enough prospect. Probably more a 4th OF type with a ceiling of Nootbaar.
I think under the old development system, Cho had very low odds of becoming good. But what we are seeing now is- at least with hitters – is the ability to maximize strengths of a player to really get the most out of their ability. Each player seems to be treated uniquely based on their aforementioned strengths. That takes a lot of instructors and systems to pull that off but now we seem to have those systems in place.
This process is turning some normal prospects into potential big leaguers and it’s turning guys who have a lot of athletic talent like Cho and Baez (and the other Baez for that matter) into potential home runs (pun intended). There are some other uniquely gifted guys who I’m really interested to see how it all turns out (Gurevitch, Yordelin Pena, Jordan, Peete, Flores, Mitchell, R Rodriguez, and Padilla).
You sure you’all want to see Blaze Jordan? This guy is already on the 40-man.

I recently have started keeping a close eye on Cuban OF Luis Pino. On May 13th he was sent up to A+ Peoria from Palm Beach despite his .196 BA and .520 OPS in 56 ABs Since then with Peoria in 36 ABs he’s batting .343 and his OPS is 1.153. He won’t be able to maintain those numbers for the rest of the season and its a small sample but I always like to watch guys that improve as they climb up the levels. Maybe we have something here for the future.
Pino and Bernal both signed in 2021 as 16-year-olds. Pino received $767K, Bernal $680K. Pino just reached High-A and has already been exposed in one Rule 5 while Bernal is at Triple-A with a 40-man roster spot. Pino has a lot of catching up to do or he will become a minor league free agent before ever getting close to StL.
But he could become a Bryan Torres and keep plugging away anywhere he can until he reaches the top. It just doesn’t seem likely that it will be with the Cardinals.
I am also a fan of Cho. Not only will the additional and enhanced minor league instruction help him it looks like his body has finally filled out. He looks more like a dude now instead of a shrimp.

I had noticed Sammy Hernandez is putting up a strong batting line, albeit with limited PAs. I guess he gets more reps now since Raniel advanced. But .300 with more walks than Ks and 4 digit OPS is worthy of comment. He’s been at it a while in A+ though and only has so much runway. There are a bunch of highly regarded catchers above him, but warehousing them all as their value dissipates probably won’t happen, so the potential for Sammy to become relevant exists.
