One of the highlights of minor league spring training is just two weeks away…

    Greatouting by Mathews.

It was a great outing by Mathews. He’ll have to work on not getting rattled. Right after the Gorman throwing error, he gives up a dinger.

Clarke and Henderson are on the Breakout roster. What does that mean?

You can’t read too much into pitcher/catcher pairings, but Findley and Dohm sure do throw to AA catchers a lot. I wonder if they might be fast-tracked into the Springfield pen.

When a player is optioned out, can he be recalled within a certain time period? And for those who are optioned out doesn’t preclude them appearing in a MLB game. Any minor leaguer can appear in games as well, right? And if recalled that doesn’t count as a used option?

Position players have to spend 10 days in the minors after being optioned – pitchers 15. There are exceptions for injuries to a major leaguer where you can bring someone up to cover who was just optioned.

If a player is recalled from their option in less than 20 days, the option doesn’t count as an option for the season.

Right now, everyone can appear in a Spring Training game because those aren’t regular season games.

NigelT, you made a nice observation about pitcher-catcher pairings. However, Dohm threw three innings last time out, which certainly suggests a starting role. But it is also interesting that he was passed over for the preliminary Spring Breakout roster. I guess they already have enough starters for one game…

I’m a little surprised they set Crooks down already although I think this confirms what I would have done to start the season. Crooks needs to develop more in AAA and Verbal does in AA. Evaluate again in July to see if Herrera has any chance of sticking at C. From there you can explore trades based off info obtained and who is left can be promoted up a level.

Do you mean Bernal? If you do, he is ready for Memphis.

I did mean Bernal. Autocorrect failed me.

Are you basing him being ready off some views of him in Spring? He did really good in AA last year to start the year but he dealt wore down and overall it was just an average season. I don’t think he needs a whole lot more time there, but another 2-3 months would be good for his development.

if Herrera has any chance of sticking at C

Well, he just got scratched due to ‘knee inflammation’, so lets see where that goes. It is important to recognize that a knee doesn’t just get inflamed for no reason, and we don’t know the reason. It can be rested until the inflammation goes away, but that doesn’t mean the reason went away.

    ATM asked:

Are you basing him (Bernal) being ready (for Triple-A) off some views of him in Spring?

Yes and discussions with others here in camp. However, the scenario you mentioned is certainly not impossible. In fact, I wrote about that possibility during the off-season in this free article.

Has Moreno done enough to be given a chance? I’d take his potential over Roycroft.

Hey Brian, Is Mejia pulling a Donovan Salano? It seems he is starting to produce about the time he leaves the organization. A number of swith-hittinh middle infielders have had lengthy careers without ever wearing birds on tbe bat. Many of the names escape me but a Valera and a guy whose name started with an I like Imeldo Vargas or something come to mind.

Mejia is only 20 years old and hasn’t advanced past Palm Beach. I think he has three more seasons before free agency so he has plenty of time remaining. He did fall off our Top 50, so he has some work to do.
