Also BS South and Southwest ExtraProbably want to give Baker more ABs, and my guess is Siani will be back soon and maybe they have both him and an improving Scott on the roster.
No CF Friday here tomorrow. We did fish ‘n chips today – cod not catfish, so not sure what we will go with tomorrow but it won’t be fish of any kind.
It was almost 60 years ago that these two clubs played 3 games in Yankee Stadium. Games 3,4, and 5 of the World Series were all thrillers, with our club winning two of them. All three featured clutch home runs.
With the Series tied at a game apiece, game three featured great pitching from Curt Simmons and Jim Bouton. The game was tied 1-1 going into the ninth. The Cardinals did not score in the top half. Mickey Mantle stepped in to start the bottom of the ninth and hit the first Barney Schultz knuckle ball about 500 feet to win it.
The Yankees looked to take charge of the series in game four, racing to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The score stayed that way into the sixth. Pinch hitter Carl Warwick started the inning with a single. Curt Flood singled. Lou Brock popped out. Dick Groat grounded to second but Bobby Richardson’s throw to second went astray, loading the bases. Loading the bases in 2024 usually means futility will follow, but not on this October day in 1964. Ken Boyer drilled a grand slam to put the Cardinals ahead 4-3. Great bullpen work by Roger Craig and Ron Taylor held the Yankees scoreless after the first and the Cardinals earned a 4-3 win tying the Series at 2 games each.
Game five is mostly lost to history, but was one of the more thrilling Series games ever played. Bob Gibson started for the visitors and was masterful. He had the Yankees shut out with one on and two out in the ninth, up 2-0. But Tom Tresh turned around a Gibby pitch and thrilled the Bronx fans with a two-run, game tying home run! Unbelievable! Just when the Cardinals looked to go up 3 games to 2, the Yankees pull even.
But hold on – Bill White walks to start the top of the 10th. Clean-up hitter Ken Boyer attempts to sacrifice White to second (they played it different back then), and beats out the bunt for a hit. White then steals third! He must have had a huge jump as had he been thrown out, it would have been the first out and you know the old saying, “never make the first or last out at third”. After a Dick Groat force out, second year catcher Tim McCarver drilled a three-run homer putting the Cardinals back in front 5-2.
No closer needed in this one, as Gibson went back out for the last of the 10th and shut down the Yankees, finishing with 13 strikeouts on the day and a game score of 87. Man, them were the days.
Catfish fiddlers are not to be had in St. Louis, so no CCFF for me. I have a choice of catfish fillets, catfish nuggets or Jack Salmon, which is actually a whiting fiddler.
I cannot remember if I have already reported the results of my fiddlergate investigation. I was told by a local wholesale fishmonger that farmed American catfish is not usually harvested at a size suitable for cooking and serving whole. Asian “catfish” farmed by the millions in the Mekong delta can be had frozen any size you want, but can no longer legally be sold as “catfish” and is now usually sold as Swai, and almost never as whole Swai fiddlers. At the end of the day, that is some crack investigative journalism right there, I’ll tell you that.
I’ll be missing this game tonight. I’ll be down at Jasper for the high school football game. Tonight it’s the Evansville Harrison Warriors visiting the Jasper Wildcats. Jasper got thumped by Evansville Memorial last Friday night 37-6 so they really need a win tonight against Harrison. If they lose this one it might very well be a long season. Something Jasper football is definitely not used to over the last 60+ years.
And I might actually change my mind. I might go and enjoy some catfish fiddlers this afternoon. It’s so hot I don’t feel like making myself anything for lunch.

CF Victor Scott LPham was DFA’d a few minutes ago. Jordan Walker has been recalled. I wonder if they’ll put him in tonight hoping he gets lucky in a hitters park?
This is a series that i would have def went to had ownership put a little more thought into building the team this year.
Look, if Walker is on the roster, he’s got to play. Every game. Every day. Every night. Versus lefties & righties.
Come on, Oli…show some confidence in the kid and just let him play!
I don’t understand the idea a guy shouldn’t have to play his way into a regular lineup job just because he can hit some minor league mistakes into outer space. What else does he have going for him?
Catfish fiddlers(filets actually)for Pugs tonight. I dream of the day that in retirement I’ll open a new restaurant specializing in a variety of catfish dishes, with a large open air dining section on the 2nd floor to cater to my throngs of summer patrons. I’ll name the joint “Fiddlers On the Roof”.
Two predictions for this evening…..call your bookie quickly, as I seldom miss-calculate a prognostication. Unfortunately, our Birds will be upended by New York’s Yankees this evening by the score of 7-3. And I like Rat’s feisty Jasper Wildcats squad to get into the 2024 victory column with a 24-17 win over Evansville Harrison.
I guess the Cubs are still playing to win. I also guess we have shifted into look at guys for next year mode.
Once Armstrong makes his first appearance as a Cub, he can fill a bullpen role in the all-time Cub-Cardinal team beside the great ones, Lindy McDaniel, Bruce Sutter and Lee Smith.
Oh, and we ended up doing burgers and a beer at a local brew pub that had our favorite burger food truck.
Pugs, love the “Fiddlers on the Roof” concept. It is a no doubt winner! Maybe my brother-in-law, a brewer, could create a signature beer to go with it. A “Fresh Fiddler Freedom Lager”. 🍺
