There are reports that Glasnow was adament about making todays start. On the surface, it looks like a phantom IL to rest Tyler, and since they are facing us, its a good opportunity to throw your depth starters.
Looking at the NLC standings now is basically irrelevant. The Brewers are on cruise control even though Yelich is out for the rest of the year. The NL wild card is now the Cardinals only hope and that appears to be completely fruitless as well. We are 4 games out, but with the way we are playing, we might as well be 20 out.

CF Victor Scott LI’d say respectabilty has become the primary goal in the form of trying to play out the season without falling to 10 or more games under even. I’ll also be curious to see what the grandstands look like now that the team seems to have packed it in and has fundamentally faded from the playoff picture. Even with an elite NL team like the Dodgers in town on a nice Saturday evening I expect the turnstile clicks to be down enough to put a frown on Willie Jr’s. face.
Have said this before, but I would switch Donovan and Burleson in the order. Donovan has the higher OBP, Burly the higher slugging pct. I want my higher OBP guys at the top, and slugging guys after to drive them in.
Also said this before – small sample Carlson with Tampa hit his 3rd home run. He now has an OPS+ of 158 – 39 PAs. On the down side he has struck out 10 times. I know it was not working in St. Louis as Mo said, but trading a young athletic guy for Armstrong?? If you can’t do better than that send him to Memphis – see if maybe he can reset.
Carlson had been in the Cardinals org for thousands of PAs. A hundred more at Memphis was not going to help.
The Rays will look for the change of scenery psych boost to produce better results and spike Dylan’s value by, say,trading deadline 2025, or winter after 2025, when he will be heading into his first arb season with three years of control remaining. They should make a tidy haul and turn a talent profit on the whole thing. Let somebody else gamble on his ultimate career trajectory. You can see that unfolding a mile away, its their modus operandi.
The Cubs won today over Toronto. 3-2 the final. If the Cards lose tonight they will be behind the Cubs in the standings.
At this point I am not sure that even another 17 game winning streak can save us.
At this point they look like quitters. The prevailing approach these days seems to be that if it’s beginning to look as though you’re not going to be good enough, the best course of action is to quit…
We have veteran leaders to prevent that TD. We’ve been carrying their useless carcasses on the roster all season, so they better prevent it.
Yeah, the veteran leadership has proven to be an utter failure and will most probably be swept aside and replaced with the promise of a new approach from an identical caste of impotent and inept clowns that will try to sell themselves to fans as something called leadership.

Yeah, Goldy was being used as on on-base guy, when he had more value as a runs batted in guy, especially on our team.
Now they have switched strategy, and put the lesser OBP guy at two. Who knows how they come up with this stuff. Walker brought up to platoon, Donovan, a higher OBP guy who does not slug at four….no wonder they are not very good. They don’t help themselves.

I agree Donny should be batting #2. But realistically it doesn’t matter too much as we have a bunch of mediocre hitters. Contreras has been great with a 140 wRC+. 2nd best has a 111 wRC+. A few guys like Winn and Donny are slightly behind that. You aren’t winning a lot of games if your 2nd best hitter is only 11% better than average. As a whole our offense has been very underwhelming.
I don’t think the players have quit. They just are not as talented as most other teams. They have done well to win as many as they have, which shows a competitive group. And while we hear those stories of guys like “Rudy”, who overcome lesser ability with heart and desire, in team sports usually talent wins the day.

I’m on the floor listening with my Gramps who lived and died with the Team. Today I would have turned the game off, but hope in the young is of course eternal.

That was one of those strange deals – a sudden change – that took me back to Matheny’s series of mistakes in that final playoff game against the Giants. What was it, 2014 I think? He brings in Wacha to pitch, after he hadn’t pitched in a couple of months. When questioned after the game he came up with a brilliant response, “I felt good about Wacha in that spot.” Well duh!!

Carter’s reference is highlighted in the 1964 Season Highlight record, where I think it is Jack Buck who says, “and where would our club be in October without that one?”
There is a site called “OnlyCardsFans” where a guy is recapping game by game 1964 on the same day as it happened – ie, the game of August 17, 1964 is posted on, or close to August 17, 2024. Really fun follow-along and the guy puts a lot of humor into has game recaps.
