Checking the leaderboards, something interesting caught my eye. Elly is #1 in SBs, but who is #2 with 35? Shohei Ohtani. The man can do it all and will most likely be joining the 40-40 club this year.

Agreed. Ohtani may be the highlight of the weekend.

I’ve got tickets to go to a game to Ohtani when he comes to a city close-ish to me. Watching one of the all time best players in their peak is a must for me.

Milwaukee won over the Dodgers on Thursday afternoon. We are now nine (9.0) games out of 1st place, tied with the Reds.

2024 might be totally wiped out after this weekend if the Dodgers sweep us.

This one might not start the home stand on a good note with Mikolas going. He never inspires a lot of confidence for me, but then most of our starters are like that. Sonny looked like a sure bet early but has stumbled of late. Gibson has had some good outings, but also usually exits early.

Ohtani is something else. He is one guy where whatever amount of money you are shelling out is probably worth it. Especially if he comes back and pitches close to the level he was before the injury.

They’re 9 games off the pace in the NLC and 4 in back of the final NLWC. And at 1 game under even at the last half of August, I’d have to say the ’24 season’s a fool’s errand before first pitch against the Dodgers. Too many hurdles for a highly flawed team to overcome.

The Cardinals are not going 0-41 to end the season. 20-21 ish seems likely so – they ARE going to win some more games and maybe even a handful of series.

Maybe this game and this series will be one of the good ones…

Its mid August and a member of the rotation with an ERA of 5.30 is still a member of the rotation, and barring injury, undoubtedly will be until the end of the season. Then, probably will be again next year. The scary thing is I feel like that situation is becoming normalized. I can remember when Jake Westbrook pulling an ERA around 4.5 or 4.6 was considered inadequate even for the 5th starter role. How are we supposed to be good again if we have to go all year with a 5.30 guy embedded up in the rotation getting 33-34 starts? How might you try to plan and craft a winning season in 2025 when you have to build a winner around that?

The good news is that the top 2 picks in the draft this year went to teams that won 76 and 82 games. Hopefully the breaks go that way for the Cards should they (likely) miss the playoffs again. Matt Holliday’s other son would look good in the birds on the bat.

Another “extension” gone bad bling. We just call him a innings eater and wear him off the roster by 2026.

It was a forced extension somewhat, due to the lack of SP in the org. If we had young SP’s forcing their way into the rotation, maybe he’s a FA this winter.

Well after next year you won’t have to worry about Miles or Matz any longer. Plus Mikolas only make $16 million next year.

Contracts usually play. We know that. Not a surprise.

They are 3-7 in their last 10 and have lost four straight. They have the sixth toughest schedule the rest of the way.

I don’t see them losing at their current rate, but I do see them being several games under .500 the rest of the way and finishing the season with a losing record.

Cubs have it easy, Cards do not

Extensions are just a bad idea, especially with established players. We tagged a year on Arenado too, to buy out his NTC and get him to defer significant salary.

Bill’s salary structure needs reworked, and since he’s broke, now is the perfect time. But, he won’t.

I agree about the contracts playing. Normally, a team gets its offense from the corners, outfield and infield. We have weak offense locked in by contracts at the infield corners, and the outfield corners has been a mish mash, platoons, UTs, underperformers like Carlson and Noot, now a 36 year old deadline rental. Layer onto that the offensive production of Scott, Crawford and Gorman. Now they’re saying against that background all they want Walker to do is platoon. Jeesh. We may never win again.

    Bling,

I think the DH adds a little to the average ERA but not sure how much … 0.25?? Maybe?

I don’t know ZTR. Somebody use to say that pitchers not having to bat and run bases helped their performance on the mound and reduced injuries. Ha.

Yep I posted a day or two ago that by September 15 the Cubs will be on the cusp of a playoff spot while the Cardinals will be well into their offseason plans. I still stand by that statement based on upcoming strength of schedules.

TBA is surely a lefty, so I will guess we face Wrobleski. He debuted in July. Hope his first name isn’t Cy.

Subs are hovering a couple games over .500 since the break. I believe the Cards are 5 games under.

I don’t know if the Cards could’ve held on the way dbacks and Padres have played since the break. My goodness we need a streak like that! Lol

I mean if we were just .500 since the break we might be barely hanging on the the last WC. Can’t look it up though. Got to head to work.

There are a lot of tickets for tonight $5 on Stub Hub and Ticketmaster. So basically giving them away.

Please allow me to un-roll the ugliness for a bit. Watching FIRST TAKE this morn as who was the greatest Yankee was discussed as the live NY crowd roared JEETER

Mad Dog Russo went off on the young, ignorant throng and asserted that Jeeter was #5 at best, and WE know who those other 4 are.

See, this generation knows nothing of the old timers old timers exept Babe Ruth and Willie Mays. The mention of Lou Gherig made me think of the Babe’s small role in PRIDE OF THE YANKEES

It got me thinking: was there ever big sports star that later became a good actor? I thought and thought but came up blank.

Joe namath in that biker flick with Ann-Margret? NO

Rowdy Roddy Piper in whatever that Movie was? NO

Jim Brown? Hmmm…his acting was flat as a pancake early on, and was actually not awful in that prison break movie with Gene Hackman (can’t think of the title) Still it’s NO

    Am I forgetting somebody?
