According to the IPhone and the Doppler Radar there’s a good chance of rain later tonight in the St. Louis area.

Anybody know the forecast or what the weather is like there now?

Rat, it just sprinkled a little here at stately Bling Manor 10 miles from ground zero. Its kind of a lumpy looking overcast, but not real mean looking. Its sprinkled a couple times. Nothing that real men would even notice.

No Carlson tonight, but he’ll be available for late inning defensive reinforcements in the OF.

It’s somewhat comforting to know that Helsley with only 11 pitches last night ought to be available in the event of a tie game in the 9th.

There is a pretty good rain shower passing over right now.

Yeah, at the moment there’s enough rain coming down to mess up these players fancy hairstyles. They won’t take the field and risk that happening.

I agree Helsley should be good to go if another non-save situation comes up today.

    Yeah, he should be.

I don’t like using the closer in a tie game either but there have been a few games this year when Ollie chose not to bring Helsley in a tie game and one of the setup guys lost the game and Ollie was criticized for that approach too. It’s a dang if you do dang if you don’t kind of a deal.

He gave him the baseball in a tie game in the 9th last night and then gave the baseball to Fernanadez in the following inning of a tie game in the 10th. In my view, there’s far less margin for error in extra innings with the silly new extra inning rules. I would guess that any logical thinking manager would rather his closer be used in a situation which demanded no room for error.

Unless he’s traded in the next couple of hours.

Game won’t start on time. It’s already in a delay.

Very good point Dom. That ghost runner raises the leverage of the 10th before a pitch is thrown.

There are 2 things that Ollie did last night that I didn’t really like. Neither seemed outrageously bad. But they didn’t follow what I would have done.

    1) You mentioned it above and I mentioned it in the game thread. I think I would rather have saved Helsley for the top of the 10th than the top of the 9th. His ability to strike people out plays up in the extra innings.

    2) I would have brought Nootbaar into the game as the right fielder instead of the center fielder. Three reasons here. Nootbaar has been playing mostly right field. Nootbaar is not a good center fielder (at least by my eye). Carlson for whatever reason seems to get better jumps and play better in CF than RF. Maybe Nootbaar catches that ball last night and we win. Maybe not. But I would have had him in right.

The new extra inning rules change the entire dynamics. In my view, you pretty much need to score at least one run to merely survive. I’ve mentioned before that it sometimes seems as though a closer isn’t called on in extras unless he has a two run lead to protect. A one run lead is almost too easy for the opposition to equal or overcome in extras. And if they do, you’ve burned your closer. The new rule is the culprit in the sense that there’s too many nuances of the game that are to a large degree blurred or entirely eliminated. It’s stupid.

1st pitch right around the corner.

    About 9:20 est.

    A must win.

    Reds lost today 4-0.

Cubs lead KC 7-4 in the 7th.

Pirates and DBacks 1-1 in the 2nd.

Bernie Sanders still running in 3rd place.

It’s my view that Contreras has a better ability to mitigate the running game than does Pages. Willson’s defensive longsuit has always been his throwing arm.

I can’t believe I was wrong about that one. That’s 2 games in a row where my prognostication skills have collapsed. Last night I had Pallante with the game winning hit in the 19th. In my defense, it did at least go to extras, although not quite 19. Maybe I’ll stick to analysis of our minor leaguers.
