Also BS South and Southwest ExtraUnfortunately the Brewers came back from a 3-1 deficit on Monday night and beat Texas 6-3. We remain five games out.
Fortunately Front Row Amy was in attendance. Dressed in yellow, looking good..:)
The Reds won over the Pirates 11-5 at Riverfront Stadium.
And me and Whitey Herdog are watching the Cubs and Giants from Candlestick Park. The Cubs are ahead 4-2 after six innings.
Stayed up late to see the Giants 3 run 9th to clip the cubbies. And how adept those cubbies are at blowing games in the later innings this year. One would think they would do almost anything to get their mitts on a closer such as Helsley. I bet they would even trade Morel straight up for Ryan. And in Milwaukee, Rat was treated to another Front Row Amy sighting……boy does Rat have a fine eye for the ladies. And I think today may be the day that Rat mosseys his way on over to beautiful Jasper to enjoy din-din at the historic Snitzerwitzel restaurant.
This Lopez guy we’re facing this evening sure has some nice numbers. I have not seen him live. If anyone else has, please share your thoughts. I would love to throw out a prediction, but that would be a foolish venture without having adequate knowledge of the opposing team’s pitcher. But, as I spoke of the other day, I think we’re looking at taking 2-3 in this series and then splitting the 4 game series with Cincy. Oh how sweet it would be to sweep these Braves.
The Cards are playing some pretty good baseball right now. Pitching and defense is a winning formula isn’t it? Our rotation keeps us in games, the offense churns out just enough runs, and the bullpen usually closes it out. Let’s keep it going.
Speaking of bullpen, Helsley kind of reminds me of Isringhausen although he throws harder. Both would rarely have a clean inning and would make you reach for the maalox but would usually close the game out which is what matters.
As for Siani he could very well win a gold glove this year. Who in the NL is a better defender in CF? He is hitting just enough to stay in the lineup so it will be interesting to see what happens when Edman returns. Perhaps a CF platoon?
The mostly good starting pitching is helping the pen do well.
The outfield will be interesting when Noot returns, especially if Burleson and Donovan stay hot and Siani continues as is. Carlson is doing better to, I think.
What’s the latest on Arenado? Is he going to the IL? Or just going to miss a few games?
And Pugs, I too enjoyed the Giants 9th inning rally to win 5-4 over the Cubs at Candlestick. That was one of those games where you just felt all along the Cubs were in the drivers seat and should have been up more than just 4-2. Jim DeShaies even mentioned that during the broadcast. But, as we all know, it’s never over till it’s over……
Oh, by the way, no trip to the Snitzlebank today. Tomorrow is the weekly trip to the Gasthof Amish restaurant. And this Friday will definitely be a CCFF – Cardinals Catfish Fiddlers Friday!

Those Cubbies have taken over sole possession of last place in the NLC. I’m not too sure Counsell’s enjoying his new surroundings as much as he may have anticipated. He may be feeling a bit like Bernie Brewer sliding down into the depths of oblivion.
I guess Gibson’s okay after missing a turn due to a bad grease fitting in his back. Hopefully a little rest and a shot or two of WD-40 is all he needed and we’ll see a nice turn from Kyle tonight. He’s been real good so far.
I’ve seen a couple of comments that compare Helsley with Jason Isringhausen. I’m imploring all of you to please not do that. I’m 20 years older since TLR last placed the baseball in Isringhausen’s hand to close out a baseball game. I’ll never survive another ordeal like that at my age. Again, please let’s not curse the current Redbird closer by drawing any parallels between him and Jason Isringhausen. It’s simply too painful to endure…
Helsley reminds me somewhat of Trevor Rosenthal. You never knew where Rosenthal’s pitches were going. He survived his own mess quite a bit back in the day.
Yeah, he could be a bit wild and chaotic too, but nothing near like Isringhausen. Thank goodness Adam Wainwright showed up in ’06.

Izzy made me dizzy too 1TD but Helsley is right up there with him. He has converted 27 out of 28 save opportunities this year yet he should still receive royalty payments from Maalox. The Flying Wallenda’s had nothing on Ryan’s tightrope act.
I like the two at the top and I’m seeing some teeth in the middle of the order that extends towards the tail end of this lineup. If a couple of these bats can begin to generate even a fraction of what we’ve seen in the not too distant past, I’m reasonably confident this team will score enough runs to consistently win some baseball games if the pitching holds up to what it’s been. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen.
He’s on pace to break Bruce Sutter’s Cardinal saves record of 45. I think the all time record is 57 from Bobby Thigpen from the White Sox back in 1990.
I for one would like to see a blowout win instead of a close shave.
I had to look it up, Rats, but Thigpen’s 57 saves in ’90 stood up for 18 years before being eclipsed by Francisco Rodriguez’s 62 saves in ’08. Thigpen’s name is easy to remember, but I had forgotten all about Rodriguez or “K-Rod” as he was known. I was also reminded that Thigpen suffered a serious injury long after he retired from baseball as he tripped and fell down a flight of stairs as he was leaving an NHL Stanley Cup playoff game. Poor guy spent a week in the hospital and almost died, but made a full recovery.
Arenado hitting 6th, I wonder what he thinks about that?
Most likely pleased that he’s not even further down the rung, Rat. He’s probably not hit this low in any batting lineup since……..never……this is definitely new unchartered territory for Arenado. Let’s see how he reacts to it. My guess is that he’ll be very productive with bat in hand this evening.

It’s been raining here in SW Indiana. According to the Doppler Radar there could be rain delays in both Cincinnati and St. Louis. Hopefully the weather cooperates and both will get played tonight.r/Esteemed Rat
The Cardinals will try to equal their longest W streak of 5 in row tonight. It’s raining just a little bit out here west of the ballark, but it was so hot today in StL. that any water instantly evaporates once it makes contact with terra firma…They’ll play baseball tonight.
Was thinking the same thing as Pugs regarding Nado – he is likely just glad to be back in the lineup and not too concerned where in the order.
A Gallegos siting could be good or bad. We might be up by 5 or more, or down by those numbers.
Really like what Siani is doing to seal the middle defense. Back in the day when Johnny Keane took over he stuck Curt Flood out in center and just let him play. Solly Hemus hemmed and hawed using several guys in center including Bill White, who self proclaimed that he was a terrible outfielder. Maybe we do that with Siani, just stay with him this year, although things could get complicated when Edman comes back as he is comparable with the glove and was better with the stick.
