Also BS South and Southwest ExtraJune 21, 2024 at 4:24 pm #257309On a good note, let’s take a gander at Friday’s out-of-town scoreboard since the Redbirds do not play this Friday night.
The Mets are pounding the Cubs at Wrigley. 11-1 Mets in the last of the 9th. Imanaga started for the Cubs and was clobbered. The Cubs are catching the Mets at the wrong time as they are very hot right now.
The Reds host the Red Sox at Crosley Field tonight in Cincinnati.
Tampa Bay travels to Pittsburgh tonight to face the Pirates at Three Rivers Stadium.
And the Brewers are once again at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego to face the Padres.
More scores and updates later……

June 21, 2024 at 4:56 pm #257311Yeah, I happened to notice a couple of days ago that the Mets had began to salvage what had looked like a lost cause of a season. And Shogun was way overdue for a shellacking. Even though he contained the Cardinals, I wasn’t real impressed with the lefty when I saw him a week ago for the first time. Lots of pitchers, especially lefties, contain the Cardinals these days.
June 21, 2024 at 5:27 pm #257314Man alive, he was really raked over the coals. I just checked the box. In only 3 IP’ed he allowed 10 runs on 11 hits and was touched up for 3 HR’s…That’s the definition of a thorough beating.
June 21, 2024 at 6:13 pm #257315I am going to a local SABR event tomorrow called the “Brock-Broglio Embroglio”. It was originally set up for last Saturday, the 60th anniversary of the legendary trade, but they had to postpone to tomorrow.
It is primarily a gathering of Cub and Cardinal fans, although all are welcome. Last time I saw these guys one of the Cub fans had a jersey with Imanaga’s name on the back. I wonder if he will attend and wear that tomorrow? I have a Cardinals jersey to wear, but no name or number is on it. I am also going to wear the navy blue cap like the team was using in the early ‘60s. Although I believe in ‘64, when the trade occured, the Cardinals had gone to the red hats at home, but kept the navy’s on the road.
Okay, back to your regularly scheduled program.
June 21, 2024 at 6:14 pm #257316I agree Dom. I was unimpressed with Imanagas stuff. Even though we couldn’t hit it.
June 21, 2024 at 6:31 pm #257318I notice you go to a lot of those and I think that’s awesome, Bikemike. I have an old Cardinal T-Shirt with the #99 on the back of it. Yep, you guessed it right…The great So Taguchi! It’s threadbare from washing and wearing it to do yard work and other chores and I rarely ever wear it anymore, but I wouldn’t trade it for a first class oven mitt…Haha!
June 21, 2024 at 7:06 pm #257323The Mets today were the first team that has faced Imanaga twice…..and you gotta love the result. I can’t wait until we get another crack at him…..Pages and Siani may go downtown back-to-back on him.
June 21, 2024 at 7:31 pm #257328I’m looking forward to the Hicks/Burleson matchup.
June 21, 2024 at 7:32 pm #257329So Taguchi – there is a name I have not thought of for a few years. Not a bad player for us. A little bit like a righty Siani, but a better bat. But heck, Waino might have been a better bat than Siani.
And Bob Gibson would probably hit 5th in this lineup.
June 21, 2024 at 7:50 pm #257331And Bob Gibson would probably hit 5th in this lineup.
With Steve Carlton and Bob Forsch batting 6th and 7th respectively, BicycleMike. I believe both were north of the Mendoza Line…..with a little power to boot.
June 21, 2024 at 7:52 pm #257332And regarding T-Shirts, one of the best I’ve ever seen was outside of the ballpark prior to game 3 of the ’06 NLCS vs. the Mets. It was worn by an extremely attractive and busty young lady. Across the front of the T-shirt at chest level were written the following words in bold block letters…”Hey NY, Kiss My Taguchi!”…Haha!
June 21, 2024 at 8:28 pm #257334Taking a gander at the Updated out-of-town scoreboard for Friday night:
The Reds lead the Red Sox 5-2 in the last of the 8th at Crosley Field.
Tampa Bay out in front of the Pirates. 10-3 the score in the 9th at Three Rivers Stadium.
And the Cubs lost to the Mets 11-1 today at Wrigley Field.
Milwaukee and San Diego no score in the top of the 1st at Jack Murphy Stadium.

June 21, 2024 at 10:43 pm #257338Scoreboard update:
Reds hang on for a 5-2 win over the Red Sox at Crosley Field.
Tampa Bay wins at Three Rivers Stadium. 10-3 the final over the Pirates.
Milwaukee and San Diego in a 4-4 tie at Jack Murphy Stadium. The Brewers had a 4-1 lead in this one. UPDATE: The Padres now lead 5-4. Homeruns by Arraez and Cronenworth the big blows. Padres still threatening me in the last of the 6th.
And the Doyers lead the Angels 2-0 in the 6th at Doyer Stadium. Ohtani’s 22nd dong accounts for all the scoring so far.

June 22, 2024 at 10:14 am #257351We get to see our old friend Hicks today. He is 11th in MLB on the ERA leaderboards. Flaherty is at #15 and Gray is #17. Hicks looks to have been the beneficiary of some luck as his FIP is #36. Gray actually looks to have bad some and luck according to FIP as his FIP is 2.58 which is 4th best. Flaherty is #9 on FIP.
In general, the teams that converted high octane RP to SP have had great success. Reynaldo Lopez leads MLB in ERA and is #10 in FIP. We mentioned Hicks already. And Garrett Crochet has an ERA of 3.25 which has steadily been decreasing down toward his 5th best FIP in baseball.
June 22, 2024 at 10:40 am #257354Some defensive stats today:
By Defensive Runs Saved, Winn is by far and away the team’s best defender (I’m a bit surprised). Herrera, Arenado, and Lance Lynn are all in the bad category. Lynn only is out there every 5 days, so to me, he easily wins the title.
By UZR, the leader is Siani. That makes more sense. But guess who’s 2nd? I bet you didn’t guess Jordan Walker. But yes, that’s the right answer. Outfielders get a huge advantage here because they have more time to expand their range.
By Outs Above Average, Siani is in a league of his own on the team at +7. The next best are Donovan and Nootbaar at +2 each. Burleson brings up the rear at -5. Outs Above Average is probably my favorite defensive metric. It seems to align better with my eye test.
June 22, 2024 at 10:45 am #257355I tend to favor OAA as well which is why I like fWAR for batters more. While I think Winn has great promise with the glove, he has had a lot of mental lapses. Anyone watching the games will also tell you Siani has been the best defender on the team. Donovan’s OF reads appear to be getting much better as he gets more time out there and he has made some really good plays.

CF Mike Siani LJune 22, 2024 at 11:36 am #257365Of the 15 NL teams, only 4 of them are above the .500 mark. Over in the AL it’s bit more balanced with 7 teams boasting a winning W/L record.
June 22, 2024 at 12:10 pm #257367Miles has been money……as that tomboy said in the original “True Grit”…..”good cash money”. If he pitches like he has over the past month, it’ll be two in a row for the men in red. I was pondering the odds earlier today of Pages ( properly pronounced “Pa-hez” ) and Siani whacking back-to-back homers and I think 415-1 is a pretty fair number. And the odds for just one of those two going downtown this afternoon would be 23-1.
June 22, 2024 at 12:25 pm #257370Just to update the last of the Friday night out-of-town scoreboard:
The Brewers fell to San Diego. 9-5 the final at Jack Murphy Stadium.
And the Angels won a close one over the Doyers at Doyer Stadium. 3-2 Angels the final in 10 innings.
We are currently 6.0 games out heading into today’s game.

June 22, 2024 at 1:30 pm #257376Uncontested SB leads to the 3rd run of the inning. They don’t even try to hold the baserunner on or throw him out. I don’t get it.
June 22, 2024 at 1:32 pm #257377Miles pitching well and getting terrible results for it. Lots of poorly hit balls off good pitches that found openings. Now he’s starting to labor on the hot day as his pitch total gets to 32 after 1 inning. 3 runs down going to the bottom of the first.
June 22, 2024 at 1:34 pm #257378Four singles lead to three 2 out RBI’s and a 3-0 Giant lead.

jj-cf-stlParticipantThey are finding grass, like throwing hits in there.
