I’m thinking this might be the last series with Marmol as the manager. Unless by some miraculous surprise the Redbirds sweep. Or even win two of the three.

Do we think Descalso will be much better because history says they would just promote the bench coach?

Could we be any worse with Descalso?

And let me check here. Joe Maddon, how old is he? Ahhhh, he’s 70 years young..:)

I’ll be entirely objective. Descalso is a former Big League baseball player. Descalso played in 48 post-season games. Descalso played on two Cardinal WS teams, one of which was a WS champion. Descalso played for manager Tony LaRussa and for coaches Dave Duncan, Jose Oquendo and Dave McKay. He was teammates with players named Pujols, Molina, Berkman, Holliday and C. Carpenter. Descalso never managed a team to a last place finish…”I’ll tell you that!”

It is baffling how management fired Shildt after he was so successful, then hired Marmol, then doubled down on Marmol after the worst season in recent memory.

And now they set themselves up for having to fire him with all the talk about how they have the personnel to win. More wasted cash that could have been used for talented on-field use. A dysfunctional management team that has completely lost touch with reality.

I asked this question several day ago and never received any response…How much are they paying the current Redbird manager? I looked numerous times and can’t find anything even close to a definitive answer.

I would guess in the 2.5MM per annum area, TD. Brian probably knows. Brian?

TD, I did look into that. Marmol’s salary is not reported anywhere, but I uncovered info that might be useful in trying to ballpark it.

Per Cot’s, Matheny was fired with “about $5.3 Million remaining on contract”. That contract ran through the 2020 season and he was fired on July 14, 2018. As of that date the team had played 93 games, or 57% of the season, so we could ballpark Matheny’s salary at “around” $5.3 Million for 2.57 seasons. That is “around” $2.06 Million per season, so I figure it was $2 Million. I did not get around to considering factors that might make Marmol’s salary more or less than that.

the only thing that is going to fix the cardinals now is a coach who knows how to win first off. secondly they have to start hitting and giving Lyan, Gibson and Mikalois run suport. without those two things we are just going to stay in the basement again this year. they have 3 games with Mets and i believe 4 with brewers. my prediction for those 7 games is they go 2 and 5 win one with mets and 1 with brewers.

Yeah, I looked around and couldn’t find anything, Bling. I’d have to guess they’re paying the current manager substantially less than they were paying Matheny, but that’s just a guess.

I don’t see how the hitting can get any worse. Guys will get better or they will be replaced with 4A types or guys that show up on the waiver wire as the season progresses. We’ve got guys well below the Mendoza line, and others around .215 BA. I don’t think they can bench Goldy, yet, but these other guys are on thin ice. They already demoted two whiz kids.

Saw a sobering fact that surprised me. The Cardinals have not had back-to-back sub .500 seasons since 1958-59. Wow – I thought they had consecutive losing seasons in the ‘70s, but they had that one year, 1973 where they finished 81-81 I believe. So they barely escaped.

That will be a major embarrassment to this management team if they are the first organization to have two consecutive sub .500 seasons in 65 years.

There has probably been some salary inflation since 2016 when that deal was signed. Matheny had 4 seasons as manager under his belt, with multiple post seasons, when he signed for $2M per. Marmol had extensive minor league coaching experience which Matheny did not, but Matheny had extensive MLB playing experience which Marmol did not.

My thinking is it is currently similar to the Matheny case. 2 full seasons plus the balance of this season left under contract. Ballpark it at $2 Million per. So it would be rather similar to the Matheny case in terms of money eaten. They did it then, so they might do it now.

What really burns with this current outfit is the genuine possibilty that the season will be a scratch before the month of June begins just as it was last year. It makes for a long and wearisome summer of baseball. I’ve been around for a minute or two and don’t expect anthing close to post-season baseball every fall. All I really expect is for my favorite team to have a chance at the beginning of August. Even a sliver of a chance will keep me entertained and interested. If these guys can’t field a team of players that can play well enough to compete until the kids get out of school for summer vacation, they need to be cleared out and replaced with people who have the ability to do so.

The problem is, that is all they aim for. You need to be aiming higher if you want to make that a reality.

I can’t remember taking up residence in last place for this many calendar dates over the course of almost 200 games, Bikemike. I’ve said a couple of times that the current regime is just as bad or worse than Rapp and his entourage.

Maybe so, LA. It’s really fun to see my favorite team place a W into the books on the last game of the baseball season. They’ve done it 5 times since I’ve been around although I was only watching closely for 4 of them as I was only 6 yrs. old in ’64. At any rate, it’s never easy, but win or lose, I can enjoy watching them when they play well and compete. That’s all I really demand.

    Rat,

Based on the managerial hires this organization has made in the last 13 years why do we think they would consider someone like Joe Maddon or Buck Showalter or any other veteran? They don’t want a veteran manager.

If it were up to me I would go with Stubby Clapp for the remainder of the year then assess the situation at that time. There is probably a 90% chance that Skip Schumaker will be available by then. His time with the Marlins is about over.

Regardless of all that that I still maintain that we have many other problems besides manager.

Skip will probably have options. He was here and saw what is in place. He would either pass out of hand, or drive a hard bargain which Mo would not accept. The same with Molina or Pujols. None of them would accept being a cog in a machine that clearly does not work with no path to effect change or improvement.

I don’t think Marmol will be let go mid-season unless Mo is looking for a scapegoat.

I’m not a big fan of Marmol but it’s hard to blame him for much of what’s going on….

Three players who need to improve for the Cardinals to contend in 2024
By Michael Carpenter | Last updated 5/6/24 Yardbarker

Its crazy to single out three guys when its nearly the entire uniformed crew.

Glass half full = its still early to turn this team around.

Glass half empty = time to circle the wagons and plan for a teardown. No one’s time is safe here except Winn.

Its probably realistic to start looking at ’26 for real improvement.
