1:15 p.m.
LHP Jordan Montgomery (5-7, 3.52) vs. RHP Gerrit Cole (8-1, 2.78)
BSM // KMOX // WIJRJuly 2, 2023 at 6:30 am #226170We get to face Garrit Cole (8-1) today.
It would be a hoot if OlliMo put guys who haven’t been ice cold in the middle of the order this time. You know, just to see how that looks, since we aren’t likely to do much vs Cole anyway. That’s probably not aligned with the philosophy though.
July 2, 2023 at 8:43 am #226173You just never know in any particular game. Even the Royals and the A’s win occasionally against a top opponent.

jj-cf-stlParticipantWhat lineup would you like to see today BB?
July 2, 2023 at 10:22 am #226180According to the box score the attendance for yesterday’s second game was 44,846…That’s outstanding! It reminds me of the time that Pecos Bill used a rattlesnake to lasso and tame a giant tornado in Kansas and ride that giant twister all the way home to Texas…
July 2, 2023 at 10:31 am #226182That depends on whether Donovan can play at least DH, and I have lost track of the narrative on that. Today’s lineup should be posted before long and we will have that much settled. If he can DH, then:
Donovan DH
Walker 7
Goldy 3
Arenado 5
DeJong 6
Contreras 2
Nootbaar or Carlson 9
Gorman 4
Edman 8I don’t like PDJ 5th, but with other guys sruggling and Carlson not hitting righties, especially good ones, there isn’t much choice except for Contreras, and I think he should have as little pressure as possible for the rest of the season.
July 2, 2023 at 10:39 am #226184Yeah 1TD, the red seats means there is a sea of red whether anybody is there or not. Genius.
The Yankees lineup for today is posted. Harrison Bader batting clean up for the Yankees tells you everything you need to know about the state of the game these days.
July 2, 2023 at 11:16 am #226186
jj-cf-stlParticipantI like that BB. Walker led the club in BA/obp for June, batting second? Why not. Contreras has shown some improvemant his last 5 GS, 171 ops+. If Donny can’t go, Noot to leadoff and Carlson to RF. Yah, im w/ya.
July 2, 2023 at 11:24 am #226187
jj-cf-stlParticipantWe should send Mike Stanton a gift basket while he’s in town, in appreciation for thumbing his nose at us when he was trade bait.
83 ops+ this season on a mega-contract that is guaranteed thru 2027. He and Knizner are very similars this season.July 2, 2023 at 11:34 am #226190Yeah Bling, they’ve enjoyed a nice cash advance over the winter months in the form of hefty season ticket sales for some time now. I’ve seen figures claiming anywhere from 30,000 to 35,000 and that’s great. However, I have to believe that if the current trend continues for another season or two, the proverbial jellyroll that feeds ownership may not taste so sweet forever. I can recall attending games during extended lean eras when a 20,000 total paid gate was considered a nice take. I don’t think human nature has changed that much since those times, so I’d guess people will eventually become weary of throwing money at an inferior product. And I could be wrong, but I’d have to guess that despite the fact that the net bottom continues to impress, Billy Jr. may feel a sense of what could be termed embarrassment at the sight of 10,000 live bodies sitting in his venue for a game vs. the NY Yankees. I hope so anyway, because it’s beginning to look like the only way any positive change will become a reality is going to be the result of fans tiring of paying inflated prices suited for a Benz and then driving off in a Fiat.
July 2, 2023 at 12:11 pm #226196#STLCards place Drew VerHagen on the 15-day Injured List with a right hip impingement. LHP JoJo Romero recalled from Triple-A Memphis.
RHP Dakota Hudson, the 27th player on Saturday, returns to Triple-A Memphis.

July 2, 2023 at 12:44 pm #226198The Cardinals have two guys in the Nootz and Donovan who both seem to have a knack for featuring a nice OBP without what could be termed an overly impressive BA. Although he was before my time as a fan, I’m certainly familiar with the name Eddie Yost who spent most of his 18 year career as a 3B’man for the Senators. In nearly 9200 career PA’s, Yost ended his career with a run of the mill .254 BA to go along with a gaudy .394 OBP. He certainly wasn’t another Ted Williams, but Teddy could hit a little bit and that .254/.394 gap is the widest margin I’m aware of from any player with over 9000 PA’s. At any rate, you can’t cross HP unless you first reach base, and Yost certainly found a way to reach for quite a while.
July 2, 2023 at 1:29 pm #226201Bottom of 1.
32 year old right handed hurler Gerrit Cole on the mound for NY today. Gerrit was the #1 overall selection out of UCLA in the 2011 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He also…..oh looks like it’s game time…..batter up!Donovan – Lines the first Cole offering into center field for a base hit.
Nooty – On 3-2 he walks…….my kind of start to a ballgame
Goldy – The runners are both on the move…..and Trevino’s throw to 3rd nails the lead runner …ouch! That ladies and gentlemen is Exhibit A as to how you let an accomplished pitcher like Cole off the hook Goldy then strikes out swinging.
Arenado – Flies out to Kiner-Falefa in right.

Yanks 0July 2, 2023 at 1:39 pm #226204Monty a no-no through 2 in this scoreless ballgame.
July 2, 2023 at 1:49 pm #226205Bottom of 2.
Burleson – Strikes out looking on a high heater that touches the outer reaches of the strike zone.
Walker – Lifts a lazy fly ball out into short right field and Kiner-Falefa will saunter on in a few strides to register the second out here in the 2nd.
Gorman – On 3-2 Nolan lays off the high mustard and trots on down to 1st base.
Knizner – Even though this fellow will never contend for any batting titles, he definitely looks much more comfortable at the dish than he did a year ago. Whiffs looking.
Cards 0
Yanks 0Cole at 33 pitches.
July 2, 2023 at 1:58 pm #226206Wow! Juan Marichal once threw 223 pitches in a game. They sure don’t make them like Juan Marichal and Cal Ripken anymore do they.
July 2, 2023 at 2:02 pm #226207Boone is hotter than a hornet over the home plate ump’s(Dan Merzel) calling of the Montgomery balls and strikes thus far in this game and if he’s not careful, he’ll be looking at his 5th ejection here in 2023, which will never compete with and ejection records set by the late great Yankee manager Billy Martin……and there he goes! Chalk up #5 for the Yankee skipper.
July 2, 2023 at 2:12 pm #226208Bottom of 3.
Edman – Drills a hard one hop grounder that Torres spears at 2nd base and he’ll make a successful throw over to Bauer at 1st base for the out.
Donovan – HBP right over the right elbow.
Nooty – Bunts Donovan over to 2nd…..nice play by the catcher Trevino who pounced on that ball very quickly right out in front of home plate.
Goldy – Taps a little nubber towards 1st base and Cole will race on over to glove it and flip it on over to Bauer at 1st to retire the side.
Cards 0
Yanks 0Cole at 48 heaves thanks to Goldy making him utilize 9 pitches in his at bat.
July 2, 2023 at 2:16 pm #226209Montgomery with a no-no through 4.
July 2, 2023 at 2:22 pm #226210Yeah Pugs, that’s a lot of pitches for one day’s work, but Marichal was still a youngster at 25 years of age when he was asked to work a little overtime back then. His counterpart in that game worked 201 pitches at the age of 42 years old and, as far as I’m aware, Warren Spahn never complained or griped about taking on a one day 18 inning workload. I’m reasonably certain his mindset was one of which consisted of a disposition that was determined to demonstrate that no 25 year old upstart was going to show him up on the pitcher’s mound…”Just give me the baseball, stay out of my way, and let me go to work!”…You know how mean and stubborn us old guys can be…Haha!
July 2, 2023 at 2:28 pm #226211Man alive…Eddie’s hit into some tough luck today.
July 2, 2023 at 2:30 pm #226212Bottom of 4.
Arenado – On 3-2 Nolan blisters a shot…fair down the line in left…. Cabrera plays the carom nicely off the sidewall and the throw to 2nd will be just a titch too late….. that’s a double for the Cardinal 3rd baseman.
Burleson – Dumps a fly ball just over Torres’ head at 2nd base and out into right center field for a hit….. Arenado will have to apply the brakes at 3rd and the Birds are in business here in the 4th.
Walker – Drills a liner into center and in comes Arenado with the game’s first run
Gorman – Flies out to the racing Bader in left-center field and the runners will have to stay put.
Knizner – Smokes a liner into center for a hit and here comes Burleson trudging around 3rd and Bader’s throw will be cutoff…2-0 Good Guys.
Edman – Lines a shot up the middle, but unfortunately that’s where Volpe had him played….steps on 2nd and the throw to 1st will complete the twin killing……too bad as Edman really scorched that ball and what a monster of an inning this could have been of the Yankee Ace, but we’ll take the 2.
Cards 2
Yanks 0July 2, 2023 at 2:32 pm #226213Cole’s fortunate he’s not taking on the look of Marie Antoinette…
July 2, 2023 at 2:35 pm #226214Montgomery with a no-no through 5. These Yanks no-hit Oakland earlier this week so turnabout is fair play.
