12:40 p.m.
RHP Jack Flaherty (6-0, 2.83) vs. Corbin Burnes
YouTube // KMOX(My understanding is that this game is not subject to blackouts, but we will see…)
May 11, 2021 at 8:17 pm #160798Counsel announces Burnes to start Thursday. His bull went well. He has been working the whole time during his COVID time off. According to a brewers video snippet on mlb.

stlcard25ParticipantWe have our ace going today, but so do the Brewers (or at least their co-ace). The less than stellar part is that the Brewers somehow have Flaherty’s number. I dunno whether he tips and only they have figured it out or what, but he has consistently struggled against them lately. His 39 earned runs and 14 HRs allowed in 61-1/3 IP are by far his most against any opponent (he’s allowed 19 earned vs the Cubs, 16 vs the Reds and 14 vs the Pirates, for what it’s worth). Put another way, his career ERA is 5.72 vs the Brewers and 2.94 against everyone else. Hopefully he can turn his fortunes against the Brewers and maybe hope Burnes is rusty after a day off.
May 13, 2021 at 9:10 am #161135I believe I will miss this one. I have to go down to Jasper to the Orthopedist and let him examine my ailing right shoulder. My nurse practitioner, who is hot, says I probably have tendonitis. But it’s been two months so she is sending me to the Orthopedist.
Anyway, hope Flaherty can outduel Burnes in this one. Would be nice to take two of three in Milwaukee. Didnt we sweep them earlier in the year in St. Louis?

May 13, 2021 at 10:28 am #161137I’ll be at work so I’ll get updates. A series win would be nice heading into SD.
Idk, maybe it’s just me but the first 2 games we seem to play a little tight and playing more not to lose rather than play to win until we get behind. Then there’s a sense of urgency. No disrespect to the crews rotation…I understand the crew has a great rotation but their starters esp Woodruff should not have shut us down so easily like they did .
I’m guessing Hader will probably not be available today. The Cardinals can make that decision easier for Counsell by having a lead heading to the 9th and make the decision easier for Schildt to not use Reyes by having a 4 run lead heading into the Bottom of the 9th.May 13, 2021 at 11:13 am #161138Scheduled day off for Molina. DeJong having MRI this morning. No details yet. But I look for Rondon to be added to the roster, if DeJong has to go to the IL. At a minimum, I expect the taxi squad to be expanded for the San Diego leg.
Edman 6
Carlson 9
Goldschmidt 3
Arenado 5
Carpenter 4
O’Neill 7
Bader 8
Knizner 2
Flaherty 1May 13, 2021 at 12:47 pm #161141Carpenter?? Come on Shildt – perfect time for Sosa to get a start. With Carp, at 5 no less, you are looking at a 3-strike out appearance. Plus this will likely be a low scoring affair, which means better defense is important.
Now Burnes is a tough one, but with Sosa you are looking at some future. Carpenter is the past.
I would have had Sosa in there and hitting in the 7 spot, with Bader and O’Neill moving up to 6 and 5.

stlcard25ParticipantGood to get the run on good base running by Edman but it looked like Arenado hesitated and then ran for home and was just gunned down. A lucky hit for Carp but unlucky to get caught.
May 13, 2021 at 12:56 pm #161143Still think of Vogelbach as a latter day Smokey Burgess.

stlcard25ParticipantBurnes set a record for most Ks to start a year without a walk. Too bad Dylan Carlson couldn’t have laid off ball 4 in the 1st.
May 13, 2021 at 1:14 pm #161145Carlson now misplays one in right, although it looks like a tough field with the shadows out there. Not a great early game for Dilly with the K on what would have been ball four, and now the mistake in the field.
May 13, 2021 at 1:16 pm #161146I think I spoke to soon yesterday when I said DeJong would hit 260. That being said… how does the lineup today with Edman at short and Carp at 2nd sound as an everyday lineup even when DeJong comes back. I’d also like to start Sosa against the lefties platooning with Carp
May 13, 2021 at 1:43 pm #161147Why the shit is this on YouTube and not Bally’s? Is MLB trying to lose more fans?
May 13, 2021 at 1:52 pm #161148O’Neill is making strides, but man, two pitches there were down and away, where you just are not going to do anything with them so you gotta learn to lay off those. That last one was nowhere near the zone.
May 13, 2021 at 1:54 pm #161149Careful with the language there, Hammer. Occasionally MLB does this, showing games on YouTube or Facebook. I am not a big fan of it, but am watching this on my computer.
Their intention is no doubt the opposite, in trying to get more fans available for watching. But as I said, it is a little more difficult on me as I have to watch on the computer instead of the television.
May 13, 2021 at 2:09 pm #161150My bad is that a cussy? MLB needs to straighten up their act. Games on tech platforms, moving the AS game over ridiculous “political” matters. Hey Manfred get your act together ya clown.
May 13, 2021 at 3:05 pm #161152This ump really giving Suter the high pitches.
May 13, 2021 at 3:08 pm #161153Dilly with a hit – Edman blazes to third! I thought he had no chance.
May 13, 2021 at 3:10 pm #161154Dang – two runners gunned down at the plate in this one. Cain really made a great throw.
May 13, 2021 at 3:15 pm #161157how does the lineup today with Edman at short and Carp at 2nd sound as an everyday lineup even when DeJong comes back. I’d also like to start Sosa against the lefties platooning with Carp
Carp cannot hit his weight and strikes too much. I would start Sosa a couple of times a week and get him into the mode of playing, and see if he can push DeJong a little. DeJong has not hit much since 2017. He is a good defensive player, but there is room for improvement at that spot.
May 13, 2021 at 3:15 pm #161158Hopefully Bullpen can hold on and get Victory 7 for Flare w/o an L.
May 13, 2021 at 3:24 pm #161160You’re right bicyclemike… Carp does K a lot and it seems its like all or nothing since 2019. I was just hoping being back in the starting lineup might rejuvenate him a little but it may be too much of a risk. I am in agreement with you about getting more playing time for SoSa.
We might look for a middle infielder at the break.May 13, 2021 at 3:27 pm #1611632 on no out. We need to at least get 1 run out from this.
May 13, 2021 at 3:30 pm #161166This game has an ominous feel to it..
May 13, 2021 at 3:32 pm #161167I know teams are always looking for that big inning but late in the game up a run.. 2 on no out.. why not bunt to get the runners over and now a base hit knocks in 2 and at worse an out scores a run. I don’t know, maybe I’m alone in this.
