Now at the halfway point of the season (if they need to play all 60), the Cards need to take advantage of the Cubs bullpen in game 2. Hopefully Gomber can give us a solid 2 innings or perhaps more.

I’m optimistically hoping for 3 or more innings from Gomber. If he is efficient, he could do it. He threw 12 pitches on the 2nd and 16 on August 31st. He’s thrown as many as 34 pitches twice this year in relief. Time for him to make a statement about being a starter.

Gomber starts the game with 7 straight balls. Not ideal.

Gomber fights back to get two Ks and a fly out. But he used 22 pitches to get through the inning.

Gomber through 2 on 38 pitches. Can he go another?

I never should have said anything about his efficiency.

25, next two Cubs can hit lefty, could let Gomber start the inning and see where it goes.

Wieters looks like the most automatic out in the lineup right now. I’d like to hope he can provide some value like he did late last year, but it’s not looking promising.

Gomber is wild. If the Cubs batters had just stood in the batters box and not swung at anything, they would have had the bases lose and who knows how many runs they would have scored. I hope Gomber figures it out, and if he doesn’t, I hope the Cubs don’t figure out what’s going on.

5 Ks for Gomber in 2-2/3. He battled. Helsley is coming in. He was iffy his first time out, so hopefully he’s knocked some rust off.

Helsley is just chucking em down the middle. He needs a putout pitch here. He gets him to pop out. A bit harrowing, but it worked.

Bull Shildt again pushing all the right buttons, pulling Gomber at the perfect time and inserting Helsley who rewards him by getting out of the inning. 3-0 Cards.

Edman and Goldy with the back to back singles, and the Cards have 1st and 3rd.

How ‘bout that for putting the ball in play and moving runners along…Edman, Goldschmidt, B. Miller with 3 consecutive singles. 4-0 Cardinals.
