The D’Backs lost at San Diego today (Sunday) 6-4 on 10 innings on a walkoff homer by Means-Sans or whatever his name is. I believe they are now six games out of the wild card with six games to go – more or less.
I assume one Arizona loss or one win by Washington or Milwaukee eliminates them. I think that’s good for us as they will have nothing left to play for. Unless, of course, the spoiler’s role.

Guess we will see some old Cardinals there – Kelly the catcher, Leake the pitcher (game 2) and the pitcher(name???) who was in the trade for Goldsmith. Daniel Descalso didn’t appear in Chicago but he is not having a great season.
Oh for joy. The DBacks pitcher has never faced any of the Cardinals. I hope that doesn’t mean what it usually means – I won’t say it. GO CARDS.
Doesn’t this stadium (with roof) have a reputation for balls flying long and far?
Hopefully Goldy will really enjoy his return visit to Arizona. Facing a lefty, he should have a solid chance to, although this guy has pretty good stats. The Dbacks were really flailing for a while, but did win a couple of games over the weekend. A series win here would really put the team in great position heading into the final series. Now for the Reds to step up and beat the Brewers.
Watching every pitch of the four games was great for my spirits but not so good for my blood pressure or my finger nails. When I think about this series it is unbelievable how the Cards were able to win all four, all close.
I’ll bet there were some who were waiting for the Cubs to rally and win like the first game. Who would have thought that it would be Carp to pull the rabbit out of the hat? Game 2 saw Wacha struggle early and most Cards fans were saying no way the Cards win this one. Game 3 was the see-saw extraordinaire. Kimbrel in, no way we win right? Two pitches and their lead was gone. Yadi and DeJong boom…. boom. No way… these aren’t the Cards doing this right? And yesterday, Mikolas had us thinking “okay three out of four isn’t bad”. JMartinez, Edman and Goldschmidt to the rescue. These games will stay with me until the end.
I could swear I saw Cardinals flying around my bedroom as I feel into slumber land with a smile on my face.
Looking at the remaining schedules:
Brewers are away from here on out, at the Reds and at the Rockies.
It looks like their current road record is 37-38.
So to me… that looks to be in our favor a bit.The Cubs finish out away from home also, at the Pirates and with Us.
Their road record is 31-44.
Although you can’t rely on the Pirates to do anything, hoping they
come through with a Win for Pride over the Cubbies on this this trip.Bottom Line for us…. Finish out strong…. win the games we need to win
and clinch the Division on our own.Is there any empathy for the Cubs faithful? In reality it could have be us hearing the flush down our own drains. Some of us here would have been very pleased if we had split this series. What they got was a banana split with that cherry on top.
The Brewers are still alive for the division. Hell, I don’t want to go through that one game play-in. Its going to be interesting to see how the Cubs react in St. Louis. They could come in with revenge on their minds.

Out of curiosity, was Ponce De Leon available during the Cubs series? Or is he out? With all the pitchers used and used again I am surprised we didn’t see him. Maybe since he hasn’t pitched for a while?
Cards are 45-24 when Edman plays.
He fits in very well with the Shildt style of play. I get the feeling that he will be playing in a lot of games for the Cards in years to come. He’s a keeper and he is a starter…. just insert him in the lineup anywhere at any position and he’ll keep you happy. And darn it…. he hits in the clutch.
Anyone still saying that he doesn’t deserve to start hasn’t been watching.

Yeah, that was really odd. Maybe they are saving him for a spot start in case they clinch the division before the final series.
To my main man gscott, who I always enjoy reading, when the games really counted…. the Cubs ain’t that good.
Does Matt Carpenter “deserve” to start, too? (As long as Wong remains out, this is a non-issue, but when he is back, is the Cards’ best team to have Fowler in center and Edman in right or do you return Carp to the bench? Either way, there are definite risks.)

Carp has been much better lately. A healthy and productive Carpenter would be a huge boost to the lineup. If Bader continues to scuffle at the plate, I’d imagine we could see more Edman in RF and Carp at 3B once Wong comes back. Especially against RHP, that would provide a potentially nice lineup.
When Wong comes back, things will get dicey. Edman back to the OF I presume. Bader keeps digging the hole deeper that he is in at the plate.
Arizona is currently six (6) games behind both Washington and Milwaukee for the wild card. They are hanging by a thread. They basically have to win out while both the Nats and Brewers have to lose out. Hopefully we can get a win tonight in the opener. Then, perhaps, things might become easier the next two nights.
Milwaukee has three at Cincinnati and three at Colorado.
Washington has five with Philadelphia and three with Cleveland, all in Washington.The Cubs basically have to sweep Pittsburgh and then win two of three in St. Louis next week. A 5-1 week and they might stand a chance if Washington and/or Milwaukee falters. Doubtful the Cubs will catch either since they are four (4) games behind with six to play. But one never knows.

It was a glorious weekend Ny. No doubt about it.
Now let’s make so those Cubs are eliminated from the playoffs altogether so Theo can tear it down and Merlot Joe can go elsewhere.
Pluses and Minuses coming up:
Plus – McCarver done, hope Edmonds has the DBack series.Minus – First two games are BBB games. BBB=Breakfast/Bacon/Baseball via TIVO. Might catch the first two or three innings live but 8:40pm first pitches insures this old man will be snoozing by inning 3.
Plus – Goldy will get to meet up with his old buds and show them how good he hits in their place. Also get to see Luke Weaver, Carson Kelly and Mike Leake again. Leake pitches Tuesday and Kelly is main catcher. Weaver just coming off IL.
Minus – No Kolten…..but his brother is DFAed by the Rays and plays 2B too. hint, hint.
Plus – Everybody smiling around here lately.
Minus – A close friend who I introduced to Cardinal baseball this season and who has become a staunch diehard Card fan told me this morning he has cancer of the throat and it has metastasized.
Plus/Minus (depends on how you view it): Ned Yost is retiring. Mike Matheny may get the KC job.
Plus – the classy way the Card team celebrated they achievement of playoff status – a toast with a glass of champagne. They can slop it all over when they win the division.

Sorry to hear that MM3. Sports pales when you deal with that stuff.Please tell him I’ll add him to my prayers. I do know people who have gotten over it. They can do alot nowadays. I had prostrate myself. Getting old is not for sissies!
Great team wins in a tough series. Az won’t be a cakewalk. Youngs numbers pretty much match Waino’s but we’ve been better lately. One game at a time and we may win the whole Enchilata!
