Brewers have won seven straight games. Tied with the Cubs for the 2nd wild card and both are four games behind the Cards in the NL Central.
I would love to have two out of three this series. Then comes the Nationals with Strasburg, Corbin, and Scherzer. I’d settle for one win there.
The Cubs now have the Pirates and Reds at home. They might very well go 6-0 their next six games. We might be tied going into Wrigley.
I am afraid we are just about doomed.

Four games ahead are just not enough. If we had taken care of business in Mile High we could be 6 games up now but that is baseball I guess. You know we have some tough games ahead but one series that worries me the most is Arizona – they have nothing to lose and, like Colorado, have enough weak pitchers to stifle the Cardinals who love to be stifled by strange pitchers.
For those first two Rockies games I was wondering if somebody slipped the boys a couple pounds of mary jane – they acted like they were higher than a mile but at least they finally came down today.
GO CARDS – this is when it really counts.
Folks, let’s try to be a bit realistic and look at what remains of the season schedule. The 3 NLC contenders all have 16 games left to play but who they play may make a huge difference.
Cubs – 10 games at home, 3 on the road. 3 each with Pirates and Reds and 4 with Cardinals at home. 3 with Pirates at their home and 3 with Cardinals to end season at Busch. So only 7 of their 16 games are with a team above .500.
Brewers – 10 games at home, 6 on the road. Home include – 4 with Padres, 3 with Pirates and 3 with Reds. Away games include 3 with Cardinals and 3 with Rockies to end season. So only 3 of their 16 games are with a team above .500.
Cardinals – 9 games at home, 7 on the road. Home include 4 with Brewers, 3 with Nationals and 3 with Cubs to end season. Road games are 4 with Cubs and 3 with Diamondbacks. ONLY the DBacks have a record below .500.
A key factor here is that the Cubs and Brewers are finished facing each other but not finished facing us. I am a bit queasy of the odds of taking it all.
It doesn’t take a genius to see who has the toughest road to hoe so lets start hoeing it tonight
MM3, agree, the Cards are very lucky the Cubs stumbled in SD. A four game lead just doesn’t seem like enough with the schedule they have coming up. If they can win 2 of 3 this weekend and somehow split at Wrigley, they will be fine…. those are big IF’s though.
There seems to be a slight hint of lack of confidence in our Cards this season. Especially considering we are up 4.0 games on CHC and MIL. Even what some are saying regarding the schedule remaining are true, we are the team to beat.
I don’t know how folks can be so “up” on the Cubs. CHC has been proving them wrong series after series lately. And “lately” means this stretch run for the division… its a whole new season really.
I’m pretty sure that there isn’t as much confidence in the Cub’s and Brewer’s dugouts as there is being posted here. You’d think that we are the club that’s 4.0 games out.
The Card’s magic number is 14, with 16 games remaining. Let those guys sit around their lockers and do the math.
Cubs were “supposed” to easily sweep Brewers or at least take the series, then they were “supposed” to easily take the Padres…. both didn’t happen
It’s baseball enjoy the Cardinals right now for every minute you get.
Scoreboard watch and root on those teams facing your opponent today even if they may be enemies tomorrow
Cards are playing pretty well, that is all you can hope for.
No one wants to back into the playoffs, so as much as it would ease my nerves to have a 10 game lead going into the Cubs and Brewers matchups, no one would want to see a playoff appearance and the terrible team that we would see if we got in losing all of those games.
It is already playoff baseball folks! Get hyped! Every pitch is exciting!
I don’t blame some of our posters for not feeling confident about the Cards situation. The schedule doesn’t lie. We have a murderers row of a schedule and the Cubs have cream puffs and the head to head showdown at Wrigley where we are 0-6 this year doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence either. No to mention the sour taste of the way the last 4 seasons have ended.
The Cardinals are going to have to prove to us that this team is different and that this year is different. I really hope they do. The opportunity is right there. Can we seize it? Normally having a 4 game lead with 16 games to go would be a good spot but I completely understand the jitteriness.
I’d be thrilled with two out of three against the Brewers this weekend.
For my late lunch I am going back to the Amish restaurant this afternoon. They have those Catfish Fiddlers on Friday and I just love those things! Mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, noodles, cherry pie, it will be good.
Of course I was just there yesterday too..:)

God knows I’m behind the Cards 100 percent, as I have been for more than half a century. I think the lack of confidence mentioned above is directly related to offensive performance, or shortage thereof, that the birds have regularly displayed this year and is illustrated by comparative statistics. We lack even one star hitter. We must put all our eggs in the pitching basket and hold on for the next 15 games.
If the good guys go 8-8 over the last 16 both the Brewers and Cubs would have to go 13-3 to beat the Cards out right. Yeah the schedule is loaded down the stretch but to be the man, you have to beat the man.
Correction to my post. The Cubs have 10 games at home and 6 on the road (not 3).
Correction #2. We have 3 games at home with the Brewers (not 4).Am I concerned? You betcha. I am not unhappy that Baez and Yelich or out of commission and I do hope that some of our rookie callups can show us their stuff (like Ravelo and his 487 ft dinger). Wonder if Counsel will pull his ‘opener’ act on us tonight. Thankfully the next 6 tough games are being played at Busch which eases my concern a bit. Hoping for the Pirates and Reds to play spoiler may be asking for a bit much. Anyway …………..GO CARDS
The only hope we have of the Cubs not going 6-0 over their next six games is the fact that Pittsburgh has been playing better and that the Reds have done well this year against the Cubs.
Still, I am expecting the Cubs to go no worse than 5-1 the next six games.
You are correct Rat. The Cubs know that this 10 game homestand is going to make or break their season. I suspect they will have the hammer down.
What I hope does not happen is that the eliminated teams start playing their rookie callups just to get a look at them before next season. Sort of like an early spring training. Save their veterans from injury type thing.
Bucs come out roaring with 4 runs in the top of the first only to see the Cubs smack them back with 5 in the bottom of the first. Is the wind blowing out at Wrigley?
Uh oh. Rizzo grand slam. Cubs 10-4 in the third.
This game is going as expected. They will make mincemeat of the Pirates and Reds.
Pirates have it back to a 10-7 game now.
Still hope – I guess.

17-7 Cubs after 5. Guess that means we’ll darn sure have to beat those beermen tonight to maintain our margin.
Nice score with those Amish catfish fiddlers, Rat! I bet Rat had a little fiddler on the roof (of his mouth) as he exited the joint. Back-to-back Amish restaurant visits, Rat? Someone must be sweet on one of those lovely Amish waitresses……good luck trying to get past 1st base there , Rat! That situation would be akin to Hee Sop Choi trying to swipe 2nd base vs Yadi. The best catfish fiddlers I ever had was at this Ma & Pa establishment in southwest Kentucky. The rascals nearly melted in your mouth. I would indulge in some c. fiddlers more often, if the wifey didn’t think they were gross.
And what a maiden post out of our new friend, Skippy McKill! Welcome Skippy……hope that was the first of what will prove to be an endless river of Skippy McKill posts.
