Palm Beach Cardinals left-hander Austin Warner has been named the Florida State League Pitcher of the Week for the period of May 21-27.
The 23-year old, a Louisville, KY native, delivered a dominant complete-game shutout at Bradenton last Monday. Warner yielded just four baserunners on three hits and a walk and struck out 10 Marauders. A double play meant that he faced just 30 batters while firing 70 of his 103 pitches for strikes, leading to a tidy 1 hour, 47 minute Palm Beach victory.
In the process, Warner lowered his season ERA with the Beach Birds to 2.86 over eight starts. The former Bellarmine (KY) University hurler joined the Cardinals organization last June when his contract was acquired from River City of the independent Frontier League.
After the weekend games were interrupted by weather, Palm Beach is set to take the field Tuesday night with Warner back on the mound.
Warner is the second Cardinals farmhand to be recognized for his pitching success last week, and the second left-handed Austin. He joins Austin Gomber from Memphis of the Pacific Coast League taking top pitching honors in their respective leagues.
