Tuesday, August 25, 2020 – Kansas City 5 at St. Louis 4

The St. Louis Cardinals (10-9) failed to capitalize late, falling to the Kansas City Royals, 5-4, at Busch Stadium Tuesday evening.  Each team has claimed one of the series’ first two games with the rubber match slated for Wednesday night.

A four-run third gave the home team a 4-2 lead.  But on a night in which starter Adam Wainwright said he struggled with command of his signature curveball until the fifth inning, that lead was never safe.  Wainwright battled through seven frames, yielding single tallies in four, on seven hits and two walks.

John Gant (L, 0-1) was tagged for a run on two hits and a free pass in the eighth, his only inning on the bump. It was the first time the righty had been scored upon in eight relief appearances covering 8 2/3 frames.  Tyler Webb worked a clean ninth.

But St. Louis had late opportunities to flip the script on their cross-state rivals.  Paul DeJong was struck down at home plate trying to score from first on a double by Yadier Molina for the second out of the eighth.  The next frame, Harrison Bader tripled to center with one gone but Tommy Edman and Paul Goldschmidt failed to get him home against former St. Louis closer Trevor Rosenthal.

The home team was outhit by the Royals, 10 to eight, and DeJong was the only Cardinal with multiples. The shortstop went 3-for-4 went with an RBI. Third baseman Edman walked, doubled, plated two and scored a run. Cleanup hitter and designated hitter Brad Miller singled and drove in the other St. Louis tally.

The Chicago Cubs also lost, keeping the Cardinals three games back in the National League Central Division.

Wednesday’s game:  vs. Kansas City (12-18), 7:15 p.m. CT, Dakota Hudson (0-2, 3.46) vs. Jakob Junis (0-0, 4.00), FOX Sports Midwest/KMOX
