Monday, September 21, 2020 – St. Louis 1 at Kansas City 4
Early missed opportunities on offense resulted in the St. Louis Cardinals’ 4-1 defeat to the Kansas City Royals in the three-game series opener at Kauffman Stadium on Monday night. The loss by St. Louis (26-25), combined with a Cincinnati victory, drops them into a virtual second-place tie with the Reds, 4 ½ games behind Chicago, which also won.
The visitors clung to a slim 1-0 advantage midway through the fifth, thanks to designated hitter Matt Carpenter’s fourth home run of 2020. But St. Louis failed to expand the lead, having left six on base to that point and grounding into a double play, and it came back to bite them.
Starter Adam Wainwright (L, 5-2) was tagged for three runs on six hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings while fanning seven. The damage would have been worse but for center fielder Dylan Carlson’s glove and Tyler Webb’s arm. Carlson’s leaping catch at the wall in the fourth robbed the Royals’ Salvatore Perez of a solo shot and Webb recorded the sixth’s last out to escape a bases-loaded jam, thus stranding Wainwright’s final three base runners.
Webb retired all four batters faced, striking out two, before turning the ball over to Giovanny Gallegos, fresh off the Injured List. Facing batters for the first time since September 10th, the righty permitted a tally on two hits and a base-on-balls in 2/3 of a frame. Seth Elledge retired his only batter to strand two inherited runners.
Carpenter’s bomb was one of just six hits for the Cardinals and the only one for extra bases. The designated hitter came into Monday on a 1-for-22 (.045) skid over his prior eight games.
Yadier Molina was the only St. Louis player with multiple hits, singling twice in four at bats. Tommy Edman extended his hitting streak to nine games with a first-inning single (and also walked) while Dexter Fowler went 1-for-4 in his return from the Injured List.
Tuesday’s game: at Kansas City (22-32), 7:05 p.m. CDT, Austin Gomber (0-1, 2.37) vs. Brady Singer (3-4, 4.14) FOX Sports Midwest // KMOX
