Report: New Manager for 2022 Palm Beach Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals have yet to announce their player development assignments for 2022, including minor league coaches and managers. They typically do that all at once, and not until the jobs are filled.

However, bits of information do come out ahead of time, such as when MASN Sports’ Orioles reporter Roch Kubatko broke the following news on Wednesday.

Gary Kendall was dismissed last month as the manager of Baltimore’s Triple-A affiliate, the Norfolk Tides. In his 26 years in the Orioles system, the 58-year-old had managed at every level, as well as in the Arizona Fall League.

Kendall finished with two years in Norfolk, during which his 2019 and 2021 teams went a combined 112-157. Prior to that, he managed Double-A Bowie for eight years, winning a league title in 2015.

At this point, it is not known whether 2021 Palm Beach manager Jose Leon will remain in the organization or move on. Last season, the Beach Birds struggled mightily, with their 37-80 (.316) record the low spot in a very disappointing season in terms of wins and losses in the Cardinals system across the board.

Other changes are clearly in the wind. For example, the Cardinals have been very up front about a desire to bring in new minor league hitting coaches, as this recent open invitation from hitting coordinator Russ Steinhorn indicates.

Earlier, St. Louis fired manager Mike Shildt and assistant hitting coach Jobel Jimenez declined a demotion and left the organization.

What is next?

When the Cardinals do announce their player development assignments for 2022, The Cardinal Nation will share them – as well as pointing out the specific year-to-year changes.
