The St. Louis Cardinals announced prior to tonight’s (Friday’s) series opener in Cincinnati that they have placed left-handed reliever Tyler Lyons (left elbow sprain) on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to June 6, and recalled right-handed pitcher Mike Mayers from Memphis (AAA).
Lyons, who was on the disabled list May 11 to May 25 with a back strain, is 1-0 with a 5.93 ERA in 22 appearances (13.2 IP) this season. The 30-year-old lefty leads the team with his 9 Holds.
Mayers, who is being recalled for a sixth time this season, was most recently optioned to Memphis on June 5 and he converted his 3rd save of the season for the triple-A Redbirds the next day (June 6).
Mayers, 26, is 2-0 with a 2.30 ERA in 12 appearances (15.2 IP) for the Cardinals this season. He posted a 3.0- inning save on April 12 at Cincinnati, the first save of his Major League career.
Mayers wears uniform no. 59.
Brian Walton’s take
Well, this should NOT be a surprise to anyone. The Reliever Roulette wheel continues to spin, and Mayers’ number came up again.
As I wrote when the right-hander was sent down to Memphis on Tuesday:
“As to Mayers, well, he knows the drill by now. In other words, by the end of the week, there should be another injury, enabling his return from Memphis.”
Of course, I did not exactly have to be Nostradamus to make that not-so-bold prediction.
Of note is the potential for Austin Gomber’s role in the bullpen to increase. With Lyons down and Ryan Sherriff out for the season, only inconsistent Brett Cecil remains among lefties on the 40-man roster. And the prospect pipeline of left-handers close to St. Louis is dry.
