    From Goold’s chat:

Q: Have the Cards shown any interest in pursuing Yusei Kikuchi?
    A: Yes.

Q: Now that Kukuchi has been posted, is there any set timeline for the rest of the process?
A: He’s got 30 days. Yep. Those are the new rules. I’m glad you asked because in a previous chat I got this wrong. I misunderstood the plan to post as the actually posting of the player. That’s a mistake on my part. I apologize. There was a plan to post. There was an announcement of that intent. But the official posting didn’t happen until recently, and that does give the sides the winter meetings to make something happen. The 30 days is important.

I have a real good feeling about this young guy. And at 27 he is substantially younger than most MLB free agent pitchers ever are.

In a very general sense, I see a lefty version of Jack Flaherty. Above average velocity for a southpaw, fine slider for a strikeout pitch, and a usable hook. Could be a #2/3 starter for less dough than Mike Leake received 3 years ago. With Boras it should be a pure bidding war — and with this guy you could win a winter bidding war and STILL call it a bargain. Go get him, Mo.

Is there anyplace on the internet for Japanese park factors? If it weren’t for bad luck I’d have had no luck at all, in my searching. Anybody helps me out on this, they go straight to the Nice List, I’m sure of it. (I ask because Kikuchi’s team over the past 4 or 5 years always seems to score lots of runs, and be mediocre or worse in team ERA. So I’m thinking hitter’s park. And that could of course mean that Yusei might be even better than his stellar track record implies.)

The way the FO went after Mikolas and his stats over there gives me hope they have a good grasp on Yusei’s value.

Bob, try this https://jballallen.com/files/Interleague%20park%20data.pdf or this https://yakyubaka.com/2010/09/22/team-winslosses-homeroad-and-some-park-factors/?&r=1

    Both are old data though.

If really interested try contacting this guy https://twitter.com/JballAllen

How can that be? I have never heard of a contract like that. I thought innovative contracts weren’t possible. (Insert blue font) : )

Too bad. This would’ve been a nice addition to our LH pitching core.

The West and especially Northwest have a big advantage with Japanese players.

$14mm per is much higher than initial projections. Kikuchi has never been touted as a cant miss talent so at that number seems pretty risky.

Sometimes we lose sight of the fact there can be more to signings than just money. Of course, lotsa cash always helps! 😉

Sounds like Kikuchi has not only learned English but also American BS.

Can someone explain to me like I’m in remedial school what Seattle is doing?

Reverence and respect is very important in the Japanese culture. Maybe, just maybe, he is not a fake.

That is actually a very good question. The conventional answer is that the Mariners have realized that they overachieved last year and they stand very little chance of ever overtaking the Astros in their division or the Red Sox, Yankees, and maybe Indians in the playoffs, therefore, they are going to take a step back, trim the payroll, restock the farm, regroup, and try again in a few years.

Another answer would be that Dipoto suffers from adult ADHD and can’t go more than 48 hours without making some kind of transaction.

Gscott, that doesnt explain why you sign Kikuchi to a big contract if you are in rebuild mode (rebuild is old school for tank).

I didn’t necessarily say they are in rebuild mode. Option 2 that I described has nothing to do with rebuilding. It has to do with a GM that can’t sit still.

You didnt say they were in a rebuild mode but I did and I believe that is what BHC was alluding to
