I like Stratton over Woodford because he has more swing and miss and that plays in the playoffs. And I think they keep Wainwright as the long man over Woodford just incase they are facing elimination and can get him 1 more outing.

I think they go with 12 pitchers this round. Agree with others that they go with 13 the next round.

Flaherty, Wainwright, Mikolas, Quintana, Montgomery, Gallegos, Hicks, Helsley, Thompson, Pallante, Matz, and Stratton. (but I would go with Woodford instead of Stratton!)

Molina, Knizner, Goldschmidt, Pujols, Yepez, Edman, DeJong, Arenado, Donovan, Nootbar, Carlson, Dickerson, Burleson, & DeLuzio.

Leaving off Libby, Woodford, Hudson, Romero, Cabrera, Naughton, Naile, Gorman

Is there a deadline for the playoff roster to be announced?

Pitchers; Flaherty, Gallegos, Helsley, Hicks, Matz, Mikolas, Montgomery, Pallante, Quintana, Thompson, Wainwright, Woodford.

Arenado, Burleson, Carlson, DeJong, DeLuzio, Dickerson, Donovan, Edman, Goldschmidt, Knizner, Molina, Nootbar, Pujols, Yepez.

Pretty much a no brainer with the possible exception of Stratton/Woodford. I don’t see any reason to man up with 13 pitchers in a best of 3 unless you wanted to eliminate DeLuzio and replace him with an extra LHP out of the BP in the person of Cabrera. That might not be an entirely bad idea. Schwarber led the NL with 200 K’s and I think Cabrera has a better chance at a K when one is sorely needed than either Thompson or Matz. In fact, I’m not sure I want Matz facing either Schwarber or Harper in a high stakes situation. He serves up too many taters…

Lee…I asked the same question. It’s my understanding that they’re announced the morning of the 1st game, but I wasn’t told of any official deadline or time of morning.

Brian Walton on the Game 162 thread:

Anyone know precisely when the post-season roster has to be set?

Generally, the morning of the first game, but it can be adjusted up until the start of Game 1.

Mark me down as favoring 12 pitchers for a 3 game set.

If Gorman makes the roster then who plays SS if Edman get injured? Id I recall no one loved Donovan at 6.

I’m hoping both Stratton and Woodford make it and someone is left off and is not used at all until possibly the DS.

    No formal announcement yet. Rumored:
    12 pitchers/14 position players.
All five starters on the roster.
Gorman over Burleson as lefty bench bat.
    Naughton as third lefty reliever.

    .266/.337/.433 vs LHP
    .248/.309/.418 vs RHP
That the 2022 Phillies team splits and why I didn’t think a 3rd LHP was necessary vs them. And I’d trust Stratton more than Naughton, assuming that’s the swap with all 5 SP on the roster.

LH hitters: Marsh is much worse vs. LHP. Stott was better vs LHP. Schwarber is much worse. Harper is worse vs LHP.

RH hitters: Castellanos is better vs LHP. Bohm crushes LHP. Segura is significantly better vs. LHP. Hoskins crushes LHP. Realmuto is pretty even.

    Naughton
    Vs RHP .374/.409/.542
    Vs LHP .163/.212/.265

If it was the old days of a LOOGY guy then fine. Not with the 3 batter rule.

If all 5 starters make the roster, and if they need Naughton as a 3rd lefty reliever, it means Montgomery is reserved for game 3 starter. If it was going to be Flaherty or Wainwright, then Monty is the 3rd lefty reliever. So Flaherty and Wainwright work out of the pen.

As for Gorman. Whatever. I don’t like the move, but Burleson probably wouldn’t have been used either. Going to have to be careful when to use him, if at all. If Jose Alvarado is available for Philly there is no way you can bring in Gorman. His 101 mph sinker and 95 mph slider will remind us in a hurry why Gorman was demoted. They have a lot of swing and miss in their pen, lead by Alvarado 14.3 k/9.

    DeJong?

Then who does DeJong make it over? Deluzio or Burlson? In stl25’s projection he doesn’t have DeJong making it.

I think Gorman has about a 10% chance of making the playoff roster after his last few weeks in MLB and back in AAA but if they wanted to flip him into the roster for Burleson then I guess it would be ok. Just don’t know why they’d do it.

Naughton..? wow, that is a joke. Lets just hope he doesn’t see the mount, it would not be good.

Official announcement does not delineate the starting pitchers, but Monty in Game 3 seems pretty certain.

The Naughton decision is an odd one. Maybe they’ll be using him up this series and switching to someone else if they’re in the NLDS.

The Naughton decision is not strange. The Cardinals obviously wanted another LH option out of the pen.

The Naughton decision seemed odd to me also, but not so much when you peel the onion back. Having a 12-man staff in this series is like having a 14-man staff in regular because Flaherty and Wainwright are now available for relief. They would be used before Stratton and Woodford this series, so not as much need for those guys.

Also, Woodford and Stratton have apparent deltas in their R/L splits, Stratton heavily so. On the other side, the Phils have a few hitters (Schwarber/Harper/Marsh) with very decided splits. So I think you can envision a situation where one of the Phil’s lefty hitters are up with 2 outs and you would want Naughton over Woodford or Stratton. Statistically Naughton was much better this season against lefties, especially compared to Stratton. I don’t expect (hoping not) Naughton to pitch, but I do see where he has more value than the alternatives.

The problem with Naughton is the 3 batter rule. Flights out against leftist but that .951 OPS by right handers against him is cringe worthy and negates the advantage.

    Brian,

FYI – the article mentions 2nd Baseman “Dylan Carlson” instead of Gorman.

CC, yes that’s why I said consider Naughton with 2 outs in the inning. Hope and pray he gets his guy.

Not big on hope and pray as a game strategy
