Admittedly a small sample and often against low level competition but I did see things I liked.
Just to show how important spring training stats are, check out the following numbers.
Altuve- Astros – 150/217/200/417
Pujols – Angels – 200/200/250/450
Acuna – Braves – 138/194/138/331
Votto – Reds – 095/367/095/354
Betts – Dodgers 238/261/286/547DeJong – 464/484/929/1412 – Nice numbers but much more important is only 7 K’s in 30 plate appearances. Appears to have a different approach and not taking the get me over first pitch fast balls as much. Fast start as in last year which indicates even more that he needs to get some rest during the season.
Gorman – 308/357/500/857 – Looked like a much different hitter than last year. Only 5 k’s in 28 plate appearances. And he was not facing pitchers below his playing level. If he can maintain that approach he will probably open at Springfield. Don’t think the Cardinals will hold him back because of blockage by lesser prospects.
Thomas – .963 OPS even with a slow start. Also 8 BB and 8 K’s in 40 plate appearances. With Bader and O’Neill still struggling with strikeouts Thomas should have a good chance to start in one of the outfield positions.
Wong – 910 OPS but more important is beginning to look like a dependable leadoff man which is a huge issue for this team.
Edman appeared to be regaining his last year performance and should play a lot
Carpenter still low average but appears to be hitting smarter.
Goldschmidt low strikeout numbers and good OPS encouraging.
Sosa solid on defense and puts the ball in play. Probably lose out to Miller for roster spot.
Yadi is Yadi.Lot of pitchers looked good. We should be a strong pitching and defense team. I think Flaherty, Hudson, Martinez, Kim and Waino will be the early rotation. Waino and Martinez will probably be up and down but should at least be .500 pitchers. Kim may fit the pen better but they will probably give him an early chance to start.
Liked Thompson, Whitley, and Cabrera. Gallegos good after bad first outing. Cabrera awesome stuff. Whitley two quality pitches and good command. Should be up sometime this season.
If the season starts in 4-6 weeks I wonder how they will get the team prepared. Redo a short spring training or just prepare through team workouts.
I agree on Carlson and Ponce. Ponce is probably a better fit for the pen. He has a deceptive delivery and is usually lights out the first time through the rotation. A lot of missed swings on pitches that should be hit.
If the young arms come through the bullpen should be really good.
My guess for the opening day roster
Catchers – Molina and Weiterrs
Infielders – Carpenter, DeJong, Wong, Goldschmidt, Edman, Miller
Outfielders – Fowler, Bader, Thomas, Dean, O’Neill
Starting Pitchers – Flaherty, Hudson, Martinez, Kim, Wainwright
Bullpen – Gallegos, Miller, Ponce de Leon, Gomber, Brebbia, Helsley, Webb, Gant, Cabrera.No room for Fernandez unless injuries, trades or release of pitchers without options. We seldom get any trade value from surplus players. Brebbia most in peril. I do think Ponce, Cabrera and Gomber still have options so they could be on the shuttle to Memphis for Reyes, Fernandez and possibly Whitley.
Gallegos, Miller (if healthy), Helsley, Webb and Gant sure things.
Sooner, you have 27 players listed on your proposed roster. You would need to remove one of the bullpen options. I agree with most of the selections except I think Ravelo gets the spot over Dean and Fernandez gets the spot over Gomber.
I think that Ravelo gets a spot.
The organization will have to determine who will be the #6 and probably #7 starters who will need to be stretched out at Memphis. I would hope that Gomber will be one of those. I’d also like to see Helsley in that mix, which also includes Ponce and Cabrera.
I would take Cabrera off. Not because he doesn’t deserve to be there but the guys without options will get a shot unless there is a trade.
I think Helsley is a must keep. Among the best we have out there.
The good news is that almost all the pitchers have options. The only ones who don’t are locks for the team anyway. So I don’t see options impacting Cabrera one way or the other.
