How should the lineup change with Nootbaar back? What if they switch to this vs. righties:
    Noot CF
    Burleson DH
    Goldy
    Arenado
    Contreras
    Gorman 2B
    O’Neill LF
    Walker RF
    Edman SS

Against lefties, move Edman up to lead off, dropping Noot down to 9th. Maybe flip Gorman and O’Neill if O’Neill is hitting well. Start Carlson in CF, moving Noot to RF and Walker to DH.

Burleson has been a pleasant surprise to me so far. After his struggles late last year, I figured he needed more AAA time. That said, I wonder how much his D is playing into the pitching stats. Moving him to DH bolsters the OF D, but keeps him in the lineup.

Gorman has been perhaps my favorite part of this early part of the season, even with Walker’s strong start. If Burleson gets this DH time, Gorman needs to be in the field.

Donovan hasn’t been getting on base as much as one would want, and this would free him up to be a late defensive sub for Gorman, starting when IFs need rest.

Carlson should be getting playing time, but I can’t see playing him in front of the others. He can be a late defensive sub for Walker and start when OF folks need rest, or against lefties.

Motter or DeJong rides the bench and is there in case of emergency.

I wonder how much the slow start comes from not having Noot available. Not something I expected a year ago to hear myself saying!

It’s going to be interesting. And since the DH plays in, the fact that Gorman, Donovan and Edman are filling two infield slots factors in to the outfielder playing time rotation situation.

There are two things I don’t believe they have given up on, even though it sometimes seems like they have.

One is Carlson as the regular center fielder. They were sold enough to move Bader. Carlson faded at the plate last year, and I am not sure how much injury and/or attitude issues may have affected things. For whatever reason they decided to pretend O’Neill is a center fielder, and did a lot of harping on it. But he’s not a center fielder. I think the dust will settle and Carlson will be out there.

The other is Gorman as the regular second baseman. I don’t think there is anything Donovan could do short of changing water into wine that can permanently derail the Gorman train.

Whatever affect Noot’s return has, those factors will emerge at some point. Those things and Walker being in the lineup somewhere are the givens.

One other thing is they are not going to pull Walker out of the outfield and make him a DH. Not now anyway.

Noot is back today. I’d personally get rid of O’Neill and keep Yepez (i know they sent Yepez down to AAA) and use
    Vs. RHP
    1. Donovan 2B (L)
    2. Edman SS (S)
    3. Goldschmidt 1B (R)
    4. Arenado 3B (R)
    5. Gorman DH (L)
    6. Walker RF (R)
    7. Nootbaar LF (L)
    8. Contreras C (R)
    9. Carlson CF (S)

    Vs. LHP
    1. Edman SS (S)
    2. Carlson CF (S)
    3. Goldschmidt 1B (R)
    4. Arenado 3B (R)
    5. Walker RF (R)
    6. Yepez DH (R)
    7. Nootbaar LF (L)
    8. Contreras C (R)
    9. Donovan 2B (L)

    Hi Bling-

Could be Carlson will end up in center. He does seems like the best there in defense. I think your point re stalling the Gorman as 2B is probably the key of what I was trying to get at. Could you tell me more about not moving Walker to DH against lefties? I agree that Walker mostly needs to be out in RF. But I’d think he could still develop as a defender even if he plays DH for 30 or so game when a lefty starts, and that would definitely boost the defense for those games….

Hey Gags. Well yeah, it would make sense as far as maximizing results right now. But it seems clear to me they are putting Walker’s development as an all around stud on the express track and everything else has to get out of the way. He will play when its easier and when its harder. He will be allowed to learn from failures. He would have to be a tough customer mentally as well as physically, so they must think he is.

Thanks, Bling. That does seem to be the path they are taking. Hope he learns RF fast!

If you have a way to watch Yankees games, spend some time watching Judge play RF. Two things will come to you pretty quick. First, that is how a big man can be very good out there without crashing into things and doing cartwheels and killing himself. Second, having a GG type next to him in CF makes him better. That is obviously why they wanted Bader. They are smart. We’ve had O’Neill out there next to Walker. Ouch.
