Hey friends. I’m thinking about starting up a National Water Polo league where I bring in top players from around the globe to compete dispersed across 30 different teams for a chance at a national title. I just need to decide how best to divide up the players.
I’m thinking it would be best to first develop a list of the top 400 players globally and hold a draft. That seems fair, right? I will let each team draft in a round robin style. But, after the first round of drafting, I plan to remove 10 of the teams from future rounds until we get to the 11th round and then I’ll add them back in there. So in the 2nd round, we only have 20 teams drafting. And then after the 2nd round, I plan to remove all but 3 teams with 7 of those teams who got removed picking back up again in the 6th round and the other 10 teams picking back up again in the 8th round. I know that sounds like it might be a little complicated but I’m looking to have equal parity to my favorite sport. And if it works for them, it should work for my water polo league. For my 3 teams that pick in every round, I will make sure they are each outfitted with near infinite resources. Basically, they can afford any player any time within some max parameters I will set. Those next 7 teams that pick in rounds 1, 2, and 6 on up will get good resources so they can occasionally afford up to 3 top 20 players but normally just 1 or 2. For that next group of 10 teams picking in rounds 1, 2, and 8 on up, they get enough resources to afford one top 20 player most of the time and every once in a blue moon they can afford 2. And for the last group of 10 teams that pick in rounds 1 and then 10 and up, they generally will never have enough resources to afford a top 20 player except in that player’s first few years before getting a big contract.
Thoughts? I sure hope that brings me some fair competition and great fan interest in what this league is all about.

January 21, 2026 at 7:27 pm #299631If you have a woman’s league (NWWPL[NATIONAL WOMAN’S WATER POLO LEAGUE]), count me in, Jnevel. I honestly believe that in this particular sport, a woman’s league could make it, while a guy’s league would most likely struggle. If anyone can pull this off it’s you, Jnevel. Good luck!
