Jordan Walker was removed from today’s game after a head-first slide into second base in the first inning.
He has a strained shoulder and more news on the injury will be provided on Sunday. At this point, his status is day-to-day.
This thread title is an eye catcher. Haven’t been tuned in today and just knew that I was going to read that Walker destroyed his knee, or crushed a bone, or something similar. Whew.
He stayed in the game and played a half inning in LF, so I’m reasonably sure he’ll be taking his rips on Tuesday after he gets what the paper reported to be a scheduled day off tomorrow. But yeah, I always recall losing Wainwright before the ’11 season, but we all got a little consolation that year.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m ready, willing, and able to start drinking the Jordan Walker kool aid, but there is no way in hell he is going to bump Nootbar out of lineup.

On opening day I bet Noot is in RF and Walker in LF. Don’t know about CF, and I don’t think its been decided yet. If Walker has a terrible next two weeks, that would change things around. They don’t need to put him on the 40 man quite yet.
O’Neill is 4 for 4 today playing for team Canada. How can anyone forget the kind of year he had in 2021 when he hit 34 HR and OPS’d .912?
Yeah, that performance is hard to forget, but so is his 2022 and his propensity to be injured. We will have to see if they keep playing him in CF when he gets back. I am thinking that’s what we will see.
Four OF’ers is common and I’d say that Carlson’s steady presense in CF is more more undecided by the emergence of Walker than the other two in the converation. I belive he’ll sit before either O’Neill or the Nootz and in my view, O’Neill is clearly the best defensive OF’er the Redbirds currently have on hand. I have zero misgivings regarding him manning up in CF.
If you are trying to keep O’Neill from getting hurt, putting him in center seems to increase the risk. But I agree that he appears to be the leader right now. But can he stay off the IL? I have a feeling that more than four outfielders will be needed this season.
What is amazing is that it looks like Nootbaar, and certainly Walker, have leaped over Carlson on the depth chart. Carlson was almost Walker-esque a couple of years ago. That could change obviously, but right now Nooty and Junior are trending up, and Dylan down.
I don’t think there’s any question that more than 4 names will make appearances in the OF over the course of 162 games. I’d guess at least 6.
Yeah, that’s what I meant too, BW. I also think Carlson will get plenty of looks well into the season prior to being displaced by O’Neill and possibly having Walker routinely playing in LF. Heck, for all we know, the Nootz could certainly falter out of the gate and end up the odd man out. At any rate, it’s fun to guess and in only about two more weeks and we’ll begin to see how things unfold.
I’d say so, Bling. I was trying to guess how many PA’s from the OF would be allocated between O’Neill, Carlson, the Nootz, Jordan and the remaining 2 or 3, but I got a headache and called it quits…Haha!
To make it easier I’m going to guess that O’Neill ends up with more PA’s than any other OF’er this season…Now that I’ve guessed, he’ll either tear a muscle attempting to squat press a large dumbell or Johnny’ll trade him before opening day.
If Walker’s injury is more of a threat to his throwing, rather than batting, I would slot him at DH, for now. That’s our biggest hole offensively, due the retirement of Phat Albert.
DH is slated to be a melting pot of Donovan, Gorman, Yepez, Burleson and whichever regulars are not playing in the field on any given day. That is without Walker, either directly or by him pushing one of the incumbent OF starters into the DH mix. Tying it up for any one player (as they did for Albert last year) would really limit their flexibility. Hopefully, that will not be necessary.
