When I look at the roster I see 16 position players and 24 pitchers. I’m expecting position players to be added and pitchers subtracted by opening day.

Whether it’s from within or from the outside the position player depth seems light.

Actually Steve, Dejong is the all time home run leader at short stop, and his last full season saw 31 homers and over 30 doubles. He has been better than league average for most of his career if you calculate by plate appearances.
I don’t need your house and really don’t need the extra cleaning, but I advise you to be more careful with your property.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see a trade between now and opening day to thin out some of the OF/DH types we have (Yepez, Burleson, Gomez, etc..) I also wouldn’t be surprised to see Mercado make the opening day roster in STL. He would be an upgrade over the DeLuzio role from last year.

As for PDJ, it isn’t ideal to have a backup infielder making $9.1M but it is just for one more year. As long as they use him properly, which is late inning defensive replacement and maybe spot starter, then I am fine with that but if they try to make him an everyday player then we all know how that will go.

They could probably trade him if they do a Fowler like trade where they pay all but $1M of his salary. The Dodgers are cash strapped right now. Maybe they would do that deal.

    They could probably trade him

I don’t see any reason to eat a few million to create a thin spot at SS. At least wait until Winn has enough AAA under his belt for us to see how close he is.

If he did get traded early, then we would have to be OK with Donovan and Gorman as the starting middle infield for the long haul if Edman went down. We would also need to acquire a SS capable infield UT. Besides Winn, there is nothing close to useful in the system.

I don’t know what the Vegas odds would be, but I would bet on the over of Gorman and Dejong combining for 50+ dingers.
At a thousand to one, it would be worth a hundred.

If PDJ was traded and if Edman was then injured then the backup infielder would be Robertson or Fermin. Lot of ifs there.

    Robertson is gone.

He was brought back. STL, then ATL, then NYM and now STL. Well, Memphis

    He is at Memphis.

Fermin is on the roster and Robertson is not. So all other things equal, the former would be ahead of the latter.

I assume you mean the 40 man? Robertson is still in the organization though.

    File this under ‘Hmmmm’.

“Walker, who is listed at 6-foot-5 and has increased his weight to around 250 pounds, is on a training program set by the Cardinals.”

Not sure which part you are reacting to, bling. Heading into the off-season, the Cardinals give every minor leaguer a program to follow over the winter. Though perhaps in Walker’s case, they are paying closer attention to his adherence to it.

As far as his weight, he is just a big man, but not chunky in any way. About six weeks ago in Arizona, here is how he looked – fine to me, so I didn’t have a reason to ask him about his weight.

He has been listed as 220 according to all the sources I have seen. We will have to see if the sources get updated I guess.

This is what happens when high schoolers grow up…they get bigger. I’ll take a Roberto Clemente/Frank Thomas clone.

Clemente was a little under six ft. in height and weighed in at a dollar six bits. About the same size as both Aaron and Mays. The Big Hurt was the size of an NFL middle LB’er.

We have younger players that are not gonna get valuable mlb reps they need because we are giving them to PDJ and that makes no sense to me!

I don’t think he’s blocking anyone as long as he’s used right. Trading Sosa and releasing Perez opened up the MI for Winn. But Winn still needs some AAA time to start 2023.

It will be interesting, and something new, seeing a 250 pounder out there. I agree the 30 pound bump up is not cause for concern. But it caught my eye, and for a moment I absurdly imagined another 30 on top of it and we’ve got Jon Broxton out there.

He doesn’t look to tip it at 250lbs. in that photo or in others that I’ve seen, but Scott Rolen was a guy who didn’t look to be 250lbs. either when he was on the field. Rolen almost looked like what could be described as wiry, but he was a big, strong man who looked to be about 225 to 230 lbs. BR has Walker listed at 220lbs.

The article I linked above has a link to a source article for the 250 pound figure. That source is Derrick Goold in an article dated December 6, so I think we can rely on the info. “around 250 pounds”

Oh, I understand, Bling. Guys can put on weight in a big hurry either via the gym or via the pork chops with rice and gravy diet.

While I have great respect for Baseball Reference as an invaluable resource, their focus is stats not bios. Many national sources plug in the height and weight of players at draft time and leave it there.

The most definitive source is the Cardinals themselves. A year ago in the Media Guide they listed Walker at 6’5, 230. That is what we have posted here at TCN as well.

FWIW, Matt Holliday was listed at 6’4, 240 and no one worried about his physique.

Walker does not turn 20 until the week before Memorial Day. I wonder which roster he will be assigned to at that time?

At 20 years old he likely has a little filling out yet to do. I’m not sure we’ve had a bruiser like that in the lineup in a long time. McGuire was around 6’5″ but didn’t ever tip it at 250 I don’t think. They might end up naming one of the upper decks after him some day.

Great example, Bling. BBRef shows Big Mac at 6’5, 215 pounds. Maybe when he was a rookie in Oakland, but no way later on was he 215…
