I don’t think we have seen them mentioned as Cards targets, as far as I know.

Cbrown, I’d like a lefty too but what do you think it’ll cost in prospects to get either one of those guys? It seems like it will be a seller’s market with few teams and good pieces in play, which could drive prices pretty high.
Neither one of these guys would excite me that much. They are ok but we already have several number three starters. We need an ace or a number two at least.
i like both of them…if Robbie Ray ‘s price is low with the others out there, then snag him as others look to bigger fish…i don’t want an Ace necessarily i want a solid LHSP
snag Peralta and Bradley in that deal too IMO
I still think Danny Duffy could be had and might be a little under the radar…him and Diekman woudl provide a jolt from the left side for the pen and rotation too
Ray has always been tough on us, but why would Arizona want to move him? They are still in the hunt for a wildcard.
I don’t know what it would take to get Minor or Ray but I think both could be had for reasonable…probably more for Ray than Minor.
We need a top of the rotation guy who you know is going to give you at least 7 strong innings each outing. Someone who will challenge the other starters and will give the bullpen a breather.
Someone like Greinke, Stroman, Syndergard, or maybe Boyd. We already have enough middle of the rotation guys. Time for an upgrade.
Grienke has no trade to 15 teams and I think were on it and I believe likes playing Arizona. Not that it matters much.
Ray has an extra year of control and Minor is under contract until 2020. I think the Rangers are in more of a sell mode at the moment but I think AZ might be interested in dealing Ray. I don’t see them being in this WC hunt in September.
GameCard – Sorry for the delayed response to your ‘Why not?’
For me, the answer is the same as gscottar above. We already have enough the middling kind of pitchers. If we can’t get a pitcher like Greinke, then IMHO, we should save the prospects and go with what we’ve got.That being said, it looks like we are already maxed out on payroll even if we could unload Carpenter’s contract. So acquiring Greinke seems highly unlikely. I doubt if we’re even players for Syndergard or Stroman. I don’t think MO will give up what it would take in prospects to get either of them.
This year Minor is not a middling pitcher. He is a quality LH pitcher which the Cardinals do not have with a 5.8 WAR and an ERA of 3.00 136 SO’s. By comparison, Grienke has an ERA of 2.87 128 SO’s. Minor does not come with a long-time commitment only thru 2020. IMO he is the way to go.
We all know the No Trade is smoke and mirrors mostly. I think he would refuse a trade to us. The guy has always been sort of a whack job.
This is a sorta-rumor.
Hearing talk that #STLCards interest in Ray and/or Chafin from DBacks might be heating up. Both could be great fit, depending on what Cardinals would have to give up.

Ray moves the needle for me. I think he’s the guy I’d most like to see picked up if the price isn’t crazy. You get a guy with great strikeout potential and you never know what can happen come October. At worst I think he’s a healthy Jaime Garcia type which is better than at least 2 of our starters.
I don’t know much about Chafin but he looks like a middle ground lefty with a year of control left. Wouldn’t it have been nice if Cecil hadn’t tanked and we didn’t have to pay him $7.5 million to basically stay away for two years?

If the Giants had not recently kicked our keesters, they might have been more inclined to send Mad Bum our way. I see a deal with another Birds team. Yes, I know Toronto already sent Stroman to the Metropolitans, but that doesn’t prohibit NY from flipping him to us. Maybe Baltimore and St.Louis as trading partners?
