Anyone Surprised that our front office did absolutely nothing to improve at the trade deadline???? So as we continue to do exactly the same things, does anyone really expect different results???? Just saying………
July 31, 2019 at 8:40 pm #100297This team could use hitting and pitching. I am really surprised they did absolutely nothing.
If they don’t win the division heads have got to roll – not that winning this divisions will be all that great this season….
July 31, 2019 at 11:11 pm #100366I am not writing the season off at this point, but … the lack of any significant moves at the trade deadline is concerning to me. The front office is betting big on several players to rebound in the second half. I hope they have made the right wager …
August 1, 2019 at 5:47 am #100377We didn’t need an additional position player but we did need a quality starting pitcher preferably a lefty and the FO failed to acquire one. I find it hard to believe that Mike Minor would have required Dylan Carlson in return.
August 1, 2019 at 5:52 am #100379Not surprised MO and Company are as incompetent as they come.
Offense isn’t that good and pitching is even worse, could have used some of both but MO and CO to clueless to see that.
August 1, 2019 at 6:29 am #100381I think they know; the numbers don’t lie.
I just think they botched whatever deals they were looking at and maybe were looking at guys they were never going to be able to get….

August 1, 2019 at 8:52 am #100407every other competing team for the Wild Card in the NL and the division made some kind of positive move to make their team better and compete…even a few not competing teams improved in ways that could still get them back in the discussion with a nice run
Only the Cardinals said it was too hard to get anything…only the Cardinals said the prices were too high…only the Cardinals didnt have the imagination and creativity to look outside the obvious choices
Usually they are good at that…Tyson Ross last year was a great find, I liked the Zach Duke deal at the time, the Rasmus deal obviously
Roenis Elias was got for nothing we coudlnt beat or match
Diekman was getable without top prospects
Dyson was getable
Romo was getable
Roark was getableare these guys MVP’s? top of the barrel options?
No…but they would have been better than what we have and given us a boost and some depth
We have been so close the last 3 years…missing by a game or two or a series ….
THAT is why you make the trade deadline moves…THAT is why they can be important…
Maybe we couldnt get a big fish… BUT it isnt us alone…when we dont go after a marginal upgrade lets say 1 WAR better improvement…but every other team out there does and upgrades a slight increase …let’s say 1 WAR…. well then by not making a move you are now 2 games out of where you could have been….2 games is is a lot when things are so tight…
everyone else saw how tight it was going to be a recognized the need for every little bit of upgrade…only the Cardinals didnt seem to think it was important enough to fight hard enough and maybe gamble a bit on upgrading

stlcard25ParticipantI was as frustrated as anyone else yesterday, but after some thought I do think that the season is salvageable and the team can even improve *if* the right choices are made to do so. The offense is tricky…there’s really no one who would have moved the needle much and the best option is still probably to go with what you have. I would like to see some of the chaff removed from the 40 man such as Drew Robinson whenever it’s possible, and guys like Urias and even Adolis Garcia and Edmundo Sosa are possible drops as well.
As for the pitching, maybe they will simply have to find a way to rotate pitchers through. What I hope they don’t do is keep guys around like Mejia if it is proven that he’s not going to get it. We have too many 40 man spots taken up with injuries. But using the Memphis shuffle (and then the callups in September) we’ve got a lot of potential help to eat some innings…Ponce, Helsley, Cabrera, maybe Reyes, Junior Fernandez and maybe even Woodford or Oviedo if we want to get creative. Are any of those guys game changers? A couple could be. But it’s still no guarantee.
VEB had a couple articles on Mo’s deadline dealings since 2008 earlier in the week. It was interesting in that two of the better years involved few trades and key contributions from farm arms. Hopefully it can happen again.
(I’ll note that if the Cards miss the playoffs I would be in full support of firing Mo or Girsch or both and starting over. I don’t think it’ll happen but it should in that case)
August 1, 2019 at 9:04 am #100411One national writer’s summary assessment.
Deadline winners: Hou, AZ, Nats, Cubs, ATL, A’s, MInn, Cle, TB, Phil, Tex, SF, SD, Mets, CIN. Non-winners: NYY, Bos, DET, STL, Sea, LAD* (*remains my WS pick)

August 1, 2019 at 9:06 am #100412We’re in first place now. If success in the postseason depends upon luck, it doesn’t matter who we acquire in a trade. If it depends upon talent, we have little chance of success in the postseason against the Dodgers or the Astros anyway.

August 1, 2019 at 9:54 am #100433I have said all along that Friedman still has the mindset of a small market analytical sabermetric type who just happens to live in LA now. Those who claim that the Dodgers are good because of all of their money don’t know what they are talking about. He doesn’t operate that way. A lot of their payroll is still paying off mistakes from the previous regime or on internal extensions. He is a great GM/VP Op although I think he missed an opportunity yesterday to punch his ticket to the WS again this year. He left the door open slightly to the other NL contenders.
August 1, 2019 at 9:59 am #100434Stl, you may be right that we could still salvage the season but everything would have to go right.
1. Ozuna, Molina, and Carp all get healthy and have a great last two months.
2. Goldy stays hot and carries the offense.
3. Wacha regains his old form and solidifies the bottom of the rotation.
4. Some combination of Helsley, Ponce, Gomber, Reyes, and Fernendez give a much needed boost to the bullpen. The chances of all of that happening seems remote to me. I would have preferred some outside reinforcements at the trade deadline. This front office made their choice and they will have to live with it depending on where we are on October 1.

Time changes people’s assessments, but that seems like a big step for you. However, to be blunt, I don’t understand how people could support the firing of just Girsch. The Cards’ execs have gone down a notch for me with their staff moves/lack of moves the last two or three years. If they don’t make the playoffs again this year and no FO changes are made, they will go down another notch. However, if Girsch is the only guy at the exec level that is relieved, then they (meaning Mo and Jr) will go down three notches for me.
August 1, 2019 at 10:04 am #100436I agree Euro. Unless there is some inside info about Girsch that we aren’t privvy to how could he be the fall guy? It has been made rather clear that all of the big decisions are made by Mo or DeWitt so why would Girsch be punished? Is it because of bad recommendations he has made? Personality conflicts? Something doesn’t add up there.

These are a couple of the things I’m thinking give the Cards slight hope for a playoff success. Maybe add in a position player to the 40 man.

All of those would be positive developments of course, but I’m not sure they all have to happen. Look at lately… Goldy has been about it and the team is surging. Last year’s push came with Matt Carpenter carrying the offense. I guess you may be saying that they have to take turns stepping up and if that’s the case, then I agree with you.
The rotation will need to be decent, I agree. With the young guns it’s possible that they could go the Milwaukee ’18 route and go with a super bullpen that can carry you. Helsley and Fernandez in particular have pitched a ton of multi inning bullpen games. So if Waino or Wacha are failing early then you let one of them or Ponce pitch the next 3 innings and then go to the A bullpen.
It seems clear that unless #1 of your list changes for the very positive, they may need to treat every game like it’s the postseason and I do think the bullpen has the potential to sustain it for a couple of months. It might mean they burn out in October but it’s not likely they could beat the Dodgers anyway (although who knows, we seem to have their number in October).
August 1, 2019 at 10:20 am #100443Is it because of bad recommendations he has made?
Yep, I bet if it happens it will be because Girsch has single-handedly has allowed Mo’s elite, state-of-the-art analytics department to devolve into disrepair, and is in dire need of an intervention.

I guess we all have our breaking points. 4 missed postseasons in a row would be mine, most likely. I don’t know much about what Girsch’s role is but if it is decided that he’s the guy that needs to go ultimately, I’ll accept it for the time being. Mo is in the same boat. That’s gotta be Dewitt’s decision to make and if the Cards fail again, someone needs to be held accountable. Someone.

ParticipantI thought that Arozarena would be a great trade chip. He seems to be behind those young OFers we have on the 40-man but he is playing like a guy ready for MLB, especially with a team that building right now.
He can still be traded but the return would be for an Milb player. Arozarena is at his highest value to date and deserves a chance with another team. Of course our FO might not want to see him succeed big-time with another team. Our fan base has seen that happen too often lately.
August 1, 2019 at 10:41 am #100447Pretty scathing article.
The front office was not determined to help the 2019 Cardinals. It was willing to help the 2019 Cardinals if it was convenient. It rarely is. It does not seem that the Cardinals want to win a World Series as much as they want to win a World Series with a roster full of homegrown prospects on affordable contracts. It’s nearly impossible to do that if you don’t tank. The Cardinals don’t want to tank. See the rub? The Cardinals seem trapped and unwilling to escape their self-imposed prison, in part because business is good.
• The Cardinals, like a lot of teams in baseball, seem more interested in winning trades than winning division titles. This is the fourth deadline in a row defined by a lack of significant additions, and this was the year to snap that trend, due to the Cardinals’ place in the standings along with the new-look, drop-dead deadline’s finality. Didn’t happen. The deal between the Cardinals and National League rival Dodgers said a lot. The Dodgers get a power threat for their bench in Jedd Gyorko, plus luxury tax relief. The Cardinals cut payroll and added two pitchers. One is injured and might never pitch for the Cardinals, because he’s a free agent at the end of the season. The other is 19, and might never pitch for the Cardinals, because he’s 19.
August 1, 2019 at 11:15 am #100448College football season is almost here. Nice job MO.
