After looking at the offensive final stats, it seems that Donovan was that guy hands down. Solid and dependable. Add his defensive prowess and energy, he gets my vote for Redbird MVP in 2024. Burley was nottoo far behind. Wynn had a great year and stayed healthy; he’ll only get better. Saggese, if minor league history is to be believed, should improve,too. Pages enjoys the game and his part of that, he is a bit behind Herrera with the bat. The SP rotation is another quandry. The performance of Pallante and McGreevy are encouraging. Between the minors and the IL, how does the home grown list of pitchers project? The hype machine has me skeptical to say the least.(Matthews, Hince,Hjerpe,etc.) We have a “logjam” of OF and yet where are they? With Willson and the two young catchers mentioned above, SS and 2B, that’s the start of a “strong up the middle”. Burley at 1B (Platoon, maybe). I havedropped from the Walker bandwagon, sorry. Gorman,too. If we settle for Sianne or Scott in CF,we need corners that can provide some offense. Do the “bad” contracts that are in effect prevent drastic improvementfor 2025? Thnx, guys.
Burleson seemed to tail off significantly the final 4-6 weeks?
He ended up stuck on 21 dingers since 8/17 and I think he was flirting with a .300 ba and ended right around .270.

Gray 3.8
Winn 3.6
Donovan 3.2
Arenado 3.1
Contreras 2.6
Helsley 2.3Burly was 18th at 0.6.
Arguments can be made for Gray, Winn, Helsley, or Donovan. Contreras needed more health to stay in the equation. I’ll go with Donovan on the position player side and Helsley on the pitching side. Donovan was able to play anywhere they needed him to well and he was one of the teams’ best hitters. Helsley got the save record and was responsible for securing 49 wins to keep the team afloat. Gray had a lot more innings, but Helsley gets the nod here because of his success in so many high leverage innings.
Winn would win our Rookie of the year. Fernandez a distant 2nd. Pages 3rd.
Pallante gets Comeback Player of the Year or Surprising Player of the Year. However you want to term it. Kittredge 2nd I guess even though he wasn’t a Cardinal prior.
Lynn wins Player Most Likely to Consume the Most Dohnuts Before a Start. Mikolas is a distant 2nd.
This is a tough one.
Our MVP has to be Helsley. Without him we may have been a 70-75 win team. He had an amazing season.
Runner-Up: Winn & Donovan.
Donny easily our best hitter and Winn our best all around player.My vote would go to Helsley as well. I’m not sure if they’d have lost 8-10 more games with a different closer, but 4-5 is easily within reason.
Runner up would be Winn. Second runner up Gray.
A .500 team that never made a run and was never in it all year doesn’t have an MVP, which, when you think about it, was a big part of the problem. If we had one, maybe we could have put up a fight.
I’d say that’s a valid point. Might want to choose a team BLT. Not as in sandwich, but as in biggest liability of this team. My choice would have to be the complete absence of any teeth in the middle of the order. I give Goldschmidt a pass simply because he’s a former NL MVP. Therefore, my dubious BLT award has to be handed over to Nolan Arenado. His mitt over on the left corner of the IF took a little hit as well this season. At any rate, I think this team’s biggest problem was the genuine inability to push runs across HP. It’s still important to score runs in baseball…
I would have two sets of hardware, a player and pitcher of the year.
The player would be Donovan, and the pitcher Helsley. Had Contreras kept up the production and played all year he would have easily won the player award.
Gray is close on the pitcher award, but Ryan was there all year and was almost money in the bank in the ninth inning.
I saw and article where some guy has a “Least Valuable Player” award and a “Cy Yuk” award to those who basically were lousy. He gave his “LVP” award this year to Goldschmidt. And that is not just a team award, he gave Goldy the award as the NL LVP.
I would not give the LVP to a guy who went over a cliff at the end of an illustrious career. That’s weak. Give it to somebody who doesn’t have an excuse. We had some of those so take your pick.
I also wouldn’t give an MVP to a UT who was ok in the field, albeit playing out of position, and a rung or maybe two above ok at the plate, and just happened to rise above perhaps the most pedestrian Cardinals offense I can remember. Any sort of self respecting lineup would have two or three guys with a better line more impact.
On the pitcher side, besides Helsley, I would recognize Pallante, whom I have always bashed, for a stand up performance down the stretch when all was lost and most everyone else was mailing it in. I believe he gave all he has. Certainly hat tip worthy.
Good call on the “Brett Cecil” award 1TD. I don’t think there is much debate that he was the worst signing in Mo’s tenure.
Haha…I don’t think I ever saw him record an out, Bikemike. His job seemed to be to enter the game and issue a BB, followed by a HBP, then a WP to move the runners up before a scorching line drive plugged the gap and rolled to the wall to score 2…
I’ll take Masyn Blaze Winn. At Baseball-Reference he was 60% more valuable than anyone else on the team (4.9 WAR versus Helsley at 3.0). But let’s average the Fangraphs & B-Ref numbers.
1) Winn 4.25 WAR
2) Donovan 2.9
3T) Gray 2.8
3T) Arenado 2.8
5) Contreras 2.75
6) Helsley 2.65It should also be noted that Ivan Herrera averaged 1.9 WAR across the two websites, in a mere 229 at-bats. It’s too bad his manager thinks he’s a worse ballplayer than Pedro Pages, otherwise he’d have a very bright future.

Lars Nootbaar, also .417.Good point on Herrera, BR. He is one guy I really like and should be in the lineup most every day, especially on a club that struggles to score runs. If Contreras is back in 2025 it will be interesting to see how they accommodate both players.
Ivan is runner up on our ROY award though. That one is a no brainer and goes to Winn.
