Todd Worrell 1986 Blown Saves

I was just looking around on Baseball Reference. I did not realize that Todd Worrell had ten (10) blown saves in 1986. He saved 36 with a very good ERA of 2.08. He gave up nine (9) homeruns in 104 innings that year and that is about average for circa 1986.

Still, 10 blown saves. I wonder what Whitey was thinking???

I recall that most of those came early on. It was weird, his era was up over 10 for a minute.

Then he settled down and was pretty good the rest of the way.

Here’s his running stats. I don’t see 10 anywhere.

Worrell had 2 or 3 BS’s vs. the Mets in April of ’86 which seemed to provide a lot of early momentum and serve as a springboard for NY to run rough shod over the rest of the pack in the old NLE that season. I can recall that that season was virtually over for the Redbirds by Memorial Day.

Irregardless it’s hard for me to believe that Worrell blew 10 saves on the year.

Rats, you are so right. I just went back and double checked and could only find one BS vs. the Mets in April. Hats off, sir. He actually had several appearances vs. NY that month to start the season and wasn’t too bad at all. At any rate, I recall the Mets trouncing the rest of the NLE that season.

That ’86 season was brutal if you detested the NY Mets as much as I once did. They won 108 regular season games that season and virtually wrapped up the NLE by the early part of June. Then, the evil baseball gypsies descended on Buckner’s mitt in game 6. In any case, it made ’87 that much better as no one gave the the Redbirds much of a chance to unseat the ’86 NY champions. Might have done better with the Twins if not for Clark being a casualty. I’d have to say that the Mets were the most intense Cardinal rivalry that I’ve experienced as a fan. The Cubbies are one thing, but the Mets of the 80’s were genuine baseball bloodsport.

That’s correct. He had ten (10) blown saves in each of his first two full seasons. I bet Herzog was about to sh~t himself! That’s 20 blown saves!
