With a loss tonight the Cardinals will be three games behind the Brewers, so I felt like offering a small cause for optimism.
Starting on July 15, the Cards will play 12 of 14 games against easy teams. (Easy is defined by this fan as any team currently on pace for 90+ losses.)
Then they will lose three to the Yankees.
Then they have 14 of 17 versus easy opponents.
Then three games against the Braves.
Then 17 of 19 easy games.
So by my math that’s a very extended stretch wherein the Birds play an astonishing 43 of 56 games against the dregs. Of course, if they keep underperforming their talent level, it won’t matter.
They need a solid quality starter. Matz is hurt. Waino and Kenny Hudson aren’t all that great. Mikolas is doing fairly well. And Flaherty is always hurt. Flaherty has been touted as their #1 starter, their ace, but he’s always hurt.
We just need a #1 starter, that ace we can depend upon. The Mets have two. Dodgers have 2-3. Houston has one. We don’t have any.

Well playing in a weak division has its perks. We have lots of issues regardless. Our starting pitching is average and that’s probably giving it too high praise. Our relief pitching is inconsistent. Some of that is due to the starters, some due to pitchers not performing well, some due to bad managing. But our lack of pitching was a known issue coming into the season. Yea we’ve had injuries but every team has those so you can’t use that. Offensively we have been inconsistent outside of a few exceptions. But we are using younger guys which a lot of people want and that’s exactly what you are going to get from those guys. This team really could go either way right now. We could do great against the weaker schedule or we could just basically join right in with them.

That would require investing big dollars. Not the recent Cardinal way.
