Some need to take off the blinders and see more than just the 2023 season. The system has gone from historically highly rated with a productive pipeline to lowly rated with a poor pipeline. Mo has made a mess of things, and the 2023 ML debacle was just a symptom of the problem, not the problem. He has made some good moves at the deadline, and this winter’s moves might turn out good, but it is all necessary because of the underlying problem.
The Cards weren’t favorites by any means to win the WS in 2006 and 2011.
That led to the internal theory that if you just make the playoffs anything can happen. Mo has been setting the club up with that in mind for a number of seasons now, and it hasn’t worked. Let’s see if they bulk the team up a lot more this off season. Especially in the bullpen, where so many games were lost last season.Vibe Schmibe…..the best way to improve the vibe is to win games. The Oakland A’s of the early 1970’s would literally come to fisticuffs with each other yet they won the world series three years in a row.
I remember the late 70’s and early 90’s. They were dismal times for the Cardinals. The Cardinals have been “good” under Mo but not “great”. You can call it spoiled or not but I do think that Cardinal fans expect better than just good and deservedly so. This is an iconic franchise. The Yankees have been “good” since 2009 but with zero championships. I highly doubt their fanbase is satisfied with that.

They used to have seasoned leadership and now I’m not sure how you describe their management, but it’s not seasoned or very proficientat[sic] leading. That’s where part the problem starts. The upper management and lack of leadership. That must be fixed before they become successful again. Otherwise they will end up wasting two of the more talented players they’ve employed.
Arenado can’t be too pleased with this mess that Mozeliak has brought on himself. Arenado came to St. Louis because they WERE a winning team and a likely play-off contender nearly every year. Now? Not so much. And the Diamond Sports and Bally Sports Midwest effect on payroll numbers aren’t going to help out down the road.
I get really tired of all the people who think they know what is in Arenado’s head. That is double from people who are not credentialed, have no legitimate contacts and have never even met him. (I have never heard of Mr. McElroy, so I am sorry if I misrepresented him, but I am not going to find his article and read it.)
As far as playoff contention, let’s look at the facts. The streak is ONE in a row. Each of Arenado’s first two years with the Cardinals, they were a playoff team. If Nolan is upset about post-season years one and two, he should look in the mirror, as he batted 1-for-12 with no walks.
When there is no news for them to rehash, there is nothing more predictable for “internet writers” to create a pot and then stir it.
One thing about it, whether we are in agreement with management’s approach this off season, you have to be happy to see them taking the lousy 2023 seriously and doing things to make next year better. Like Nate said when the Cubs signed Dansby Swanson last year, “At least they are trying.”
They must feel Lynn and Gibson will help the “clubhouse vibe”, given the type of players they say they want to bring in, and conversely the type they want to move on from.

I wonder what was in his head when they asked him about showing up at WWU.
Yeah, they seem to have concluded that it’s a serious matter to have gone from a division winner to dead last in the NLC in a single season. I also think they’re trying and have addressed the primary on field flaw which seemed to be SP’ing. However, it’s my guess that this team may actually get worse until a managerial change has been effected. But that’s only a guess from someone who doesn’t care at all for the current Redbird manager.
I certainly don’t have any idea concerning what goes on inside of Arenado’s coconut. My primary thought on Nolan Arenado at this juncture is that I wish he was Scott Rolen…
He’s 5 for 33 in games that aren’t part of the regular season. The WWU would have been important to me when I was 10 and cared about a silly signature on a scorecard or baseball, but right now it’d be nice if he could hit a few pts. better than .152 in games that are played in Autumn.
Since WWU is still five weeks away, maybe one should wait a bit before condemning anyone for not participating. But I get that is much more fun to jump to conclusions and criticize.
My primary thought on Nolan Arenado at this juncture is that I wish he was Scott Rolen…
I am not sure why Scott Rolen is looked at as such a good guy. His departure from the club was not exactly friendly, with him and LaRussa being in a playground-type spat. Scott had trouble with Larry Bowa in Philadelphia as well. Don’t get me wrong, I liked Rolen – he was my favorite Cardinal for awhile there. But it’s not like he was a saint. And for a big guy, he was a bit fragile, getting hurt quite a bit. Not “Ty O’Neill” fragile, but he seemed to have issues from time to time.
And Scott did not exactly tear it up in post season. In that woeful 2004 World Series where the entire team fell apart, he was 0 for 15. I still remember game one where we fell behind, then battled back and Rolen was up with a chance to tie it or put us ahead. I was like, “Rolen is going to tattoo that monster here.” He swung at the first pitch and popped it up, I think it was a foul out to the third baseman.
That whole series was a disaster.
I want to thank Card4Ever for the “…dreadful 70’s” aside. Made me laugh in the sense that no one not a Cardinals fan during that decade can truly grasp how Godawful it was.
And a shout out and Hello to Nate. At a time where my entire world has been rocked, your consistency is oddly comforting.
I often wondered what Ted Simmons thought about some of those 70’s Cards teams.Sure the Cards had some solid players but it never seemed like both the hitting and pitching were working together at the same time.I often wondered if Gussies tightwad ways caused much of the players problems.I remember listening to a Cards-Reds game on radio (Reds broadcast until dark enough to pick up Kmox) and the Reds were beating the Cards like 10 to 2 in the 4th or 5th inning when Joe Nuxhall said McBride sent several notes to the official scorer complaining about a call his previous AB.Nuxhall said that is a oerfect example why the Reds are a winning contending team and the Cards were filled with too many guys only wanting their stats .
Yes indeed, the ’70s were dreadful for the Cardinals and us fans. The problem was, Gussie made too many knee jerk demands based on emotion rather than sound, principled thinking. We were horribly managed. This current “slump” management is in is nothing compared to the decade long mismanagement that occurred in the ’70s.
Even when we made a good trade, we would undo it. Like getting Reggie Smith – finally a real good deal. Then a couple years later, we send him to the Dodgers in a ridiculous deal where we acquired a catcher, Joe Ferguson, even though we already had an all-star at catcher. Just made no sense, and that was the story year after year.
