I like both players but if Ted Simmons is in the Hall of Fame doesn’t Jim Edmunds belong there as well.
Simmons career WAR is 50 & Edmunds is 60.YES. Without a doubt. Besides the WAR, Edmonds had 36 more HR’s and an OPS that was 118 points higher than Simmons.
Simmons OPS – .785
Edmonds OPS – .903A good case can certainly be made for Edmonds. The biggest differentiator is Simmons being a catcher, where good offense is a little harder to come by.
Speaking of which, how about the year Salvador Perez is having in Kansas City? He has quietly become one of the best catchers in the game.
The difference probably is relative to position. Compare Simmons to other catchers vs comparing Edmonds to centerfielder.
Personally I feel Edmonds should be on for his defense. He had enough great offensive years to justify when you combine it with his defense which was in the stratosphere of all time great. But unfortunately not enough real baseball voters, everyone digs the offense.
I have a feeling that Simmons has more contacts around MLB since he also spent time as an MLB executive, and that helped him get into the HOF. Edmunds deserves to be there, too. No doubt about it.

Whether they played different positions is missing the point. I am happy that Ted Simmons is in the HOF but numbers, in this case, don’t lie…Edmunds was a great defensive player and has great offensive numbers as well. His overall case is convincing to be in the HOF.
I agree Edmonds should be in the HOF but the problem with your original post is you compared too guys who played different positions. That’s disingenuous, especially since one is more physically demanding than the other. It’s like comparing a goalie to a winger in hockey or comparing a center in basketball to a shooting guard. If you wanted to play up that Edmonds is worthy of the hall of fame you should have compared his stats to guys in the HOF who also played outfield.
