Love them, hate them whatever you want I was shocked to see how Jeff Luhnow impacted the current World Series Champion.
Altuve was there when Jeff arrived in late 2011 but virtually every regular position play and starting pitcher and closer Pressley were acquired during his tenure as Astro General Manager. Of particular note is the number of international players who have provided a major impact.
I have been a fan of Luhnow because he demonstrated one of my pet theories developed as a human resource executive. I strongly believe that technical experience is far less important than leadership ability in selecting management.
Jeff did what good managers do to turn an organization around. Cleaned house which also gave him a couple of great positions in the draft and began building from there. Probably the only mistake was letting JD Martinez get away.
He was fired for the signal stealing scandal. If Jeff was involved in setting up the electronic system it was just another modernization of a practice that has been in place since the beginning of baseball.
Yeah, I miss the Expos. In a young man’s mind, SD and MTL were the first NL and Big League expansion teams. Expos always looked to be a tough out for the Redbirds all through the 70’s and 80’s. It seemed like Parrish and Cromartie hurt the Cardinals more than Dawson and Carter.
I know Jeff and I know baseball. I find his continued insistence that he knew nothing of the cheating to be insulting to anyone with a lick of common sense and an absurd stance that should keep him radioactive to MLB teams indefinitely. That is the bed he has chosen to lie in – alone among the principals involved. The others fessed up, served their penalties and got on with their careers.
For those who care what he is up to now, this article ran on Sports Illustrated about three weeks ago. I read it all and my opinion did not change. If all you care about is results and don’t care about broken glass, he is your man.

Luhnow certainly did a great job building that club on the field. While his character does not appear to be top notch, he got results.
As for expansion teams, those Astros and the Mets were the actual first NL teams. Houston was originally the Colt .45s, and those original 45s uniforms are classics.
The first ever expansion teams were the ALs Los Angeles Angels and Washington Senators, with the ‘Nats later moving to the Dallas-Ft Worth area. Those original Angels hats were cool too, with the halo around the top. The current team should trot those out now and then as retro hats – do like we do with the alternate uni’s, and wear them on say Saturday home games or something like that. The interlocking LA was a cool logo as well.
