Ugh. That’s a loser. Give up 6 homers and you are mostly going to lose.
Now let’s see who we draft. I feel like I’m more in touch with it this year than ever with us picking 7. Too bad we don’t get a 2nd rounder or competitive balance pick.
July 14, 2024 at 4:08 pm #260386Mikolas with a typical non-descript start, and not good work out of the ‘pen today. Still you have to be happy with the fact that we are competing and are a bit fortunate to be where we are at the break.
And yes, cool to get a pick as high as 7th, but would be nice to have a second rounder to supplement that. Maybe some lower round guys will surprise us, which is usually the case.
July 14, 2024 at 4:32 pm #260387It’s kind of late in the season for one of your top 4 starters to be sporting a 5+
era. A guy should have settled in by now or you should be looking for a replacement. Unless its your #5 guy, which this isn’t. And I know, Mo has bigger fish to fry.July 14, 2024 at 4:38 pm #260389Last year we were dragging Waino along. We’re always dragging Matz or some laundry list guy. The willingness to just be mediocre is maddening. The same with carrying position players just because of the sunk cost. We’re always doing that too. I’m sick of mediocrity and BillMo changing the definition of what baseball in St. Louis is supposed to be. It’s supposed to be a quality product.
July 14, 2024 at 5:00 pm #260390A couple of years ago we thought McGreevey, Graceffo, and Hence might be in St. Louis by now and perhaps part of the rotation by 2025.
How close are these guys anyway?
July 14, 2024 at 5:31 pm #260392It is not good news Rat. McGreevey sort of stalled out in AAA. He is looking OK but not dominant. Probably a future laundry list guy trying for the #5 slot next spring. Graceffo and Hence have done hard time on the IL with shoulder trouble. That doesn’t bode well, but we can hope.
July 14, 2024 at 5:50 pm #260394Why do all of our players that we have fairly high hopes for just seem to fizzle out? The list is long the last few years:
Flaherty
Hudson
Alex Reyes
Graceffo
Hence
McGreevey
Edman
Nootbaar
O’Neill
Gorman
CarlsonAt least Burleson appears to have turned the corner. Players for other teams, they seemingly turn out okay for the most part. But for some reason, not ours.
Why?????

There are so many intangibles and variables that you cannot possibly know how a player will develop. It is a human trait to try to predict the future, as we tend to dislike uncertainty and randomness. Yet the world is an uncertain place, with a lot of randomness. We want to know what the future will hold as it gives us a comforting feeling, but no one really knows. That is just how the world works, and projecting baseball players’ future is no different.
July 15, 2024 at 9:45 am #260483Rats – I think your list is mostly fair with the exception of Edman and maybe Nootbaar. Edman has far exceeded most anyone’s reasonable expectations for him. Like way above what we thought. I have no idea why he’s in that list unless you’re only considering him for this season. I think Nootbaar has exceeded expectations vs where he was drafted. But I can understand if you’re just going by what he was hyped up to be after he came up. And last, I’m not sure that Hence should be included yet.
On the flip side, you have guys like Donovan, Burleson, and maybe Siani that are exceeding expectations. Throw Helsley and Pallante in there and now it’s getting a bit more balanced.
I think the issue may just be hype. When a guy looks good, people blow it up way out of proportion. The same can sometimes be true when a guy has a rough few months or even a rough season. We live in a world where we want everything to be either great or terrible and we use hyperbole on the internet to make it sound that way. The reality is that most of the time it is in between.
July 15, 2024 at 4:23 pm #260548Is Jordan Walker going to get added to Rat’s list at some point?
July 15, 2024 at 5:07 pm #260561Yes gscottar, I inadvertently left him out.
At this point he deserves to be on that list.
