The Doyers trailed the Padres 4-1 heading to the last of the 9th at Doyer Stadium last night.

The first three batters got hits. It’s now 4-2 and the Doyers have runners at 1st and 2nd with nobody out.

Miguel Rojas comes up and hits into a 5-4-3 TRIPLE play to end the game! 4-2 Padres the final. They are now only two games out.

    Ohtani was on deck.

p.s. I wonder if a big league game has ever ended on a 5-4-3 triple play before?

I wonder if a big league game has ever ended on a 5-4-3 triple play before?

Tremendous question, Rat! But I think it’s one that definitely needs to be fielded by Skip and all of our good friends over at the esteemed Elias Sports Bureau. But maybe we here at The Cardinal Nation can quickly delve into Rat’s question from a mathematical standpoint before we flip it on over to the quality chaps at the ESB. Provided the game doesn’t venture into extra innings, a team is granted 27 outs. Now a triple play cannot occur on out #’s 1 and 2 as there could not be 2 baserunners yet. Nor for obvious reasons could it happen on out #’s 26 and 27. So we subtract 4 from 27, giving us a 1-23 chance that a triple play can occur to end a ballgame. But then there’s the second part that Rat posed. Has a triple play ever ended a game being of the 5-4-3 variety? There seems to be almost countless possibilities here, so off the top of my head I would say that the odds of a MLB game ending on a 5-4-3 triple play are extremely remote.

Man, what a way to clinch a post season berth for the Padres. Mike Shildt sure has landed on his feet.

And they still have a shot at the division, being only two games out.

Meanwhile closer to home, Bike Mike will be at the game tonight. Was hoping to see McGreevy, but obviously that won’t happen. Tonight I am with the corporate types, in a suite with a buffet and all that. I imagine most folks won’t even be watching the game, but will be at tables gabbing, gobbling and guzzling. I might be the only one of the group in a seat! 🙂

Interesting observation by a writer from The Athletic:

Can you imagine the reality in which the Dodgers:
    – Spent over $1 billion in free agency,
    – saw Ohtani produce one of the best seasons in MLB history
    – … and end up as a wild-card team?

Apparently this was the 28th time in MLB history that a game ended on a triple play.

I doubt if any were bigger than this one though. Could be I guess.

Din-din today is the weekly trip to the Amish restaurant, the Gasthof. Meatloaf, fish, mashed potatoes/gravy, green beans, noodles, dressing, sweet potatoes, cherry cobbler, sweet iced tea, and some vanilla soft serve ice cream. Then afterwards a 7×50 Palma Real cigar out on the bench in the front porch area.

Not sure what din-din will be for me, but it should be good being in a corporate suite. With it buffet style, maybe I can give Rats a run for his money a volume. 🙂

Back to that Dodgers-Padres games – I think Tommy Edman was one of the guys put out as part of the tri-killing. Checked his stats and he has found the power stroke out there with 6 homers in only 121 ABs. Still a lousy OBP though at .308.

I’m going to guess that little Eddie has a substantial impact when the Dodgers begin playing high stakes games in the post-season. He may not flash the impressive OBP numbers, but when he reaches base, he comes around to score. And some may disagree, but I still happen to believe that runs are important…

Regarding triple plays, an unassissted triple play is extremely rare as there have only been 15 recorded instances. One of them was executed by our old friend Rafael Furcal in 2003 when he was a SS with the Atlanta Braves. The team he victimized just happened to be the St. Louis, Cardinals on Aug. 10, of that season.

I recall reading as a kid one of the signature moments in World Series history was Bill Wambsganss unassisted triple play in the 1920 Fall Classic.

Largely forgotten now, which is kind of surprising since it is a “one only” occurance in the long history of the game’s showcase event.

Yeah, Bikemike, I happened to see that about the only unassissted triple play in WS history. That one may be almost as hard to duplicate or break than Vander Meer’s record.

There are quite a few records in baseball that may never be eclipsed, but I have to say that I’m reasonably certain that absolutely no one will ever work 3 no hitters in row, which is what it will take to break the record for consecutive no hitters.

The esteemed ESB report is back and there have been 737 triple plays over the course of the history of this great game. But no 5-4-3 triple plays that ended a game…..to answer Rat’s burning question.

Looks like BicycleMike and the aforementioned Rat are truly treating themselves to din-dins fit for royalty. I’m not faring quite as well, as I’m having Jimmy Dean’s biscuits and gravy, 2 large pieces of homemade Italian bread with peanut butter, butter and Schmuckers strawberry preserves and a steaming cup of Folger’s black silk coffee.

I hope more than just 2 of you have been playing my “bet the ranch” picks since coming to this site in 2006. Bragging is not my thing…….I just want to see my friends here make some extra coin. The cost to you is and always has been absolutely nothing. Every year other than 2012 have been banner years. It’s been a hobby of mine over the years…..again at the risk of sounding cocky, an extremely lucrative hobby. I play other games besides Cardinal games, but the total number of games I play a year vary, but are usually only between 15-30. This year I went 19-21 on bet the ranch games. I generally wager between $1000-$3000 per game. Tonight I took kind of a flyer on a game (over/under) just for the heck of it…..which is something I rarely do, so wanted to share it with you. Tonight I bet $1100 to win $1000 on the under for our Cards-Rockies game…..the number of runs being 10.5. This will be the last time on this site that I will post any gambling particulars, other than I will continue to share a few of the Cardinal games where I post “bet the ranch” games on the occasional game thread. Go Cards……but don’t beat them too badly tonight…..a nice 5-4 victory would be just fine.

I like Herrera more and more. Need to find an everyday role for him.

They should have done that a couple years ago.

If Wynn makes running plays like that with consistency, it takes him to a different level. Smart guy. I bet he’s not done improving.

Bling you are the guy that insists we need to use the players we have differently. This is a good example.

It’s 4-1 and if the Cardinals score about 3 or 4 more runs, I’m going to think about calling in a bet…

Pages now has 25 RBIs in just over 200 plate appearances at the bottom of the lineup. Contreras has 36 in nearly twice as many plate appearances. Goldschmidt has 60 while sitting in the heart of the order with 3 times as many plate appearances.

Who would have thought that Pages would end up with more RBI, runs scored, home runs, and stolen bases than Jordan Walker?

Before tonight I was getting kind of fed up with our trade deadline acquisition from the ChiSox. But this evening Fedde was fantastic! Winn with a double and triple tonight made me contemplate how many times he’s going to hit for the cycle in his career. I’d say at least 5 times. Oh and not that anyone cares, but I stated earlier that I “went 19-21 on my bet the ranch games this year”…..what I meant was that I won 19-21 of them. Anyway, let’s get the sweep tomorrow……..but unfortunately that’s not going to happen. 2-3 is nothing to sneeze at though. After tomorrow’s loss we and the cubbies will have identical records. The cubs entertain the Reds this weekend……should be fun.
