Whether or not the Cardinals should extend him could be questioned, but Helsley’s without a doubt in the elite closer category. I also don’t think there’s any question that those types of pitchers can be risky. We’ve all seen quite a few of them that took a steep dive in a big hurry.

Mo has previously said he does not favor long term contracts for closers. I don’t have the quote, but I know he has said it. I agree that is a good policy. So it will come down to what strategy Helsley and his agent adopt. If he can stay healthy and productive one more year and reach free agency, then one of the teams that doesn’t mind the risk of eating a lot of contract will dump a truckload of money on him. But maybe he opts for selling his first post arb year to the Cardinals this winter for the financial security, in which case he signs for two years instead of just for the last option year. The Cardinals would consider that I’m sure.

An odd factoid from the Cardinals:

Saggese became the first Cardinal to make his first two career starts at different infield positions (SS, 2B) on back-to-back days since Zinn Beck (3B, SS) on Sept. 13 & 14, 1913.
