Yeah, I’d say so too, Bikemike, but it won’t hurt him to get some work in. Heck, he’s a pitcher. Dogs bark and pitchers pitch.
5-5 in the first 10 of this 14 game run. Very nice to see them bounce back instead of having it snowball on them. And good to see Gastelum navigate that first outing.

I’m much with Brian’s take here. How do the Cards change in the next two? Does May continue and pitch in the playoffs as he has at his best? Does Mathews get the callup and how successful is he? Does McGreevy continue to taunt folks with his pitches? Do they hang on to O’Brien? Odds would be against them, but things happen in short series that wouldn’t happen in the long run. I see these next days as affecting the possibility of a May deal. The more the Cards are in the race, the more I’d think they would need to be offered to deal May.

How soon you forget Cardinal IF/OF legend Taylor Motter, who has DFAed three times in one season, same as Jared Shuster here in 2026.
And OF Ryan Vilade from last season.
And SS Brandon Crawford in 2024.
And Brendan Donovan, whose hair was much longer than this by the time he was traded.
All of those other guys are only attempting to pay tribute and honor to the legendary Manny Motter by emulating his majestic, coif. And I’d say that to do so is an admirable gesture, but there’ll never be another player quite like Manny. I can still see his long mane flowing in the wind as he blazed around the basepaths after hitting a lazy pop-up to the SS or tapped a weak ground ball to the 2B’man.
It is very unusual for somebody to make their ML debut at home. I missed the game but it looks like Gastelum did well.
“Gassy” (Luis Enrique Gastelum) should have been brought up long ago, Bling. I think Gassy is here to stay and the closest he’ll ever get to Memphis again will be on our road trips to Atlanta.
I didn’t see a play-by-play of Rat’s weekly Wednesday din-din over at the Gasthof. Hopefully his El Presidente Real Deluxe Palma 7×50 cigar puffing hasn’t resulted in Rat being banned from the Gasthof premises.
In that case, the player would probably have six years of team control remaining. That would be a wonderful acquisition but perhaps difficult to pull off. A contender might prefer to just slot that MLB-ready player into their lineup now vs. acquiring a veteran who will leave sooner.
It might play if it was a Herrera or Burly or Walker being traded, but what the Cardinals are probably offering in trade is a step down. Would May, JoJo, etc. score a top prospect in return? Maybe if they are bundled?

But they are not going to be contributors for a playoff stretch, so they are better traded in the offseason.
The players the Cardinals will likely shop if they are on the outside looking in are May, Romero, Nootbaar and Pages.
May is #2 in quality starts in the Cardinals rotation, #3 in innings and WHIP and #4 in ERA. The lists I have seen have not shown him among the top starters available at the deadline.
If Nootbaar is made available, he should bring back the best prospects, because of the extra year of control.
With May, Romero & Pages, they should focus on higher upside prospects further away from the majors rather than “major league ready pitchers” that they have been focused on the last few years…

I hope that they avoid injury risk pitchers, but that may be the only way to get high upside potential for what we have to offer.
