12:40 p.m.
LHP Matthew Liberatore (2-2, 4.70) vs. LHP Nick Lodolo (0-1, 7.20)
Cards.TV // KMOXUpdate:
LHP Brycen Mautz (MLB debut) vs. LHP Nick Lodolo (0-1, 7.20)Update 2:
This game was postponed and will be made up as the first game of a split doubleheader on Monday, August 17, at 1:40 PM.May 23, 2026 at 11:03 pm #308150We need a good outing from Liberatore. Got to wonder the availability of our relievers. My guess Soriano, JoJo, Pushard and maybe Bruihl can go.
May 24, 2026 at 6:35 am #308151Jeff Jones is reporting that Brycen Mautz, who was scheduled to pitch today for Memphis, is instead starting for StL today.
That slides Liberatore to Monday with McGreevy and May taking the other two starts in Milwaukee.
May 24, 2026 at 7:44 am #308155Interesting move and happy Mautz gets a big league debut. He hasn’t pitched bad at Memphis but needs to throw more strikes today. Mautz also gives up a lot of fly balls which may not far well in Cincy.
May 24, 2026 at 8:04 am #308158I get their logic. Give themselves the best chance to take all three against the Brewers.
May 24, 2026 at 9:03 am #308160I don’t like the move as it positions us to drop the next 2 games. Especially with having to face both Misiorowski and Harrison in Milwaukee, we need this series win today. Also, I’m sure the Reds feel slighted by this move, which is extra incentive to kick our butts this afternoon. Mautz has an extremely tough task ahead of him this afternoon.
May 24, 2026 at 9:49 am #308162We need to get used to this sort pitcher popping out the end of the pipe. By this type, I mean a survivor. A pick up truck that went on past all the Ferraris broken down on the side of the road. Whether he can be good enough remains to be seen, but answering the bell is the first bar to clear. Check.
Mautz’s draftmates from the 2022 upper rounds, Hjerpe and Hansen, have had trouble staying on the mound and so are still buried in the system hoping for better times. As a reminder, Mautz was a slightly under slot signing, with savings used to sign Rajcic in the 6th round.

stlcard25ParticipantI think Mautz will acquit himself ok today, but probably won’t make it 5 to get the decision. I’ll say 4-1/3 IP, 3H, 1 ER, 2BB, 6K. A little traffic but without big damage. The Cards win it 6-3 with another Walker big fly.
May 24, 2026 at 10:20 am #308164I don’t love this move mostly because of the bullpen situation. Everyone but Pushard pitched yesterday out of the pen. With Mautz likely to struggle to get 5, that leaves our bullpen a bit gassed for the Milwaukee series. I think I would rather have Liberatore start on normal rest today and then insert Dobbins into the rotation at the appropriate time to keep everyone on normal rest. Instead, today we have a 7-man pen (because Svanson got optioned) with O’Brien likely unavailable and 5 of the 6 available pitched yesterday.
On the plus side, it will be fun to see how Mautz pitches (assuming they are able to get this game in) and it will be nice to bring Fernandez up in a swap for Mautz tomorrow which should be an upgrade to Svanson.
May 24, 2026 at 11:26 am #308168Good point with the bullpen, Jnevel. I’m all for guys like Mautz getting the occasional spot start, as who knows, maybe one of them will pleasantly surprise. There’s a time and a place for almost anything……..but not today under these particular circumstances. The Reds are going to be seeing red today. I reluctantly call it 9-4 Redlegs, with Stewart hammering one……maybe two taters.
May 24, 2026 at 11:33 am #308169According to the Doppler Radar there is a pile of green stuff all around the Cincinnati area. And there appears to be more on the way.
Expect at least a delay in this one.
May 24, 2026 at 12:49 pm #308170It is a delayed start.
It looks like Mautz normally goes around 80 pitches and hopes to get 5 IP out of that. Ideally, this should be his AAA year, so coming up with only 40 IP at AAA is not ideal. But giving him some up and down this year is fine, hopefully. The only present alternative, Dobbins, doesn’t seem real compelling. Other guys might become alternatives later in the year.
May 24, 2026 at 1:52 pm #308172This one’s a scratch. The kids are off to Milwaukee.
May 24, 2026 at 4:58 pm #308174Beautiful washout! This 2026 squad is not only pretty darn good, but also a bit lucky.
Din-din for me today are 2 all beef dogs with extra onion and yellow mustard, Bush’s baked beans smothered in apple cider vinegar, deviled eggs and 3 nut donuts from Kwik Trip.
